Jerry Brown Leads Climate Change Conference At The California Academy Of Sciences

SAN FRANCISCO -- The United Nations' top climate change official is in San Francisco to join California Gov. Jerry Brown at a conference addressing the costs associated with preparing for the effects of a warming world.

Brown organized Thursday's conference at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park.

The event includes Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and billionaire Sir Richard Branson. Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger also is expected to attend Thursday afternoon.

Brown vowed to continue investing in renewable energy and infrastructure projects to protect coastlines from sea-level rise and homes from increased flooding from faster snow melts and longer wildfire seasons.

Brown opened the conference by calling for people to wake up to these threats, and called skeptics of global warming a well-funded "cult."

E! News host Rancic announces double mastectomy (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Six weeks after revealing she has breast cancer, E! News host Giuliana Rancic says she will have a double mastectomy.

The 37-year-old made the announcement Monday on NBC's "Today" show.

"It was not an easy decision but it was the best decision for me," she said.

She plans to have the surgery next week and said she hopes to be recovered by New Year's Eve, when she and husband Bill Rancic are planning to be in Times Square.

Rancic said she received an "overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers and support" after announcing her breast cancer diagnosis in October.

"I want to make sure to thank everyone and give them an update for being so kind and loving and supportive," she said Monday.

E! expressed its support for Rancic in a statement Monday.

"Giuliana's strength continues to amaze us," the network said. "We admire her courage and are proud to stand by her side through every step on her path to full recovery."

Support for Japan PM down, majority seeks election (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Voter support for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's government dropped for a third straight month, a survey showed on Sunday, with a majority demanding a general election before parliament passes a bill to double the 5 percent sales tax.

This adds to Noda's headaches as he faces mounting calls within and outside his ruling party for the defense minister to quit over gaffes.

Only a quarter of those surveyed backed Noda's plan to call an election after passing the contentious bill and before raising the tax. The general election must be held by late 2013.

Support for Noda, who took office in September vowing to fix tattered finances and steer Japan's recovery from the March earthquake, slid to 44.6 percent from 47.1 percent in the previous month, according to the survey by Kyodo news agency.

The government is aiming to decide on the timing and scale of the politically sensitive sales tax hike this month before submitting a relevant bill to parliament before the current fiscal year ends in March.

Noda is struggling to win broad support for the sales tax plan even as Europe's debt crisis sounded an alarm bell for Japan's heavily-indebted government.

In the same survey, 82 percent supported other tax increases planned by the government to finance post-quake reconstruction efforts.

Debate on raising the sales tax, one of the lowest among major economies, has long been politically touchy. The last consumption tax increase, in 1997, was blamed by some for triggering a recession that led to a long period of deflation.

Highlighting public distrust against politics, 71.5 percent called for a realignment of political parties, Kyodo said.

Michael Giltz: Theater: "An Evening With Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin"

AN EVENING WITH PATTI LUPONE AND MANDY PATINKIN ***
ETHEL BARRYMORE THEATRE

Two current Broadway shows offer the pleasure of major talents in concert. Hugh Jackman: Back On Broadway has received all the accolades and it's great fun. Everyone would enjoy it but I might send tourists to Jackman first and the serious theater buffs to Lupone and Patinkin. It's a modest affair, geared to being performed easily and simply all over the country in any sort of space, which the two of them have apparently been doing for years. But it offers the distinct pleasure of two pros doing what they do best in the company of one another.

The stage is scattered with stands topped by bulbs and on the side are pianist Paul Ford and bassist John Beal (both in sterling support). Front and center are Lupone and Patinkin, working their way effortlessly through "Another Hundred People" and they're off. It's not strictly a concert and it's not a lazy love-fest or walk through their greatest hits.

The heart of the show are three sections of singing and acting built around three musicals: South Pacific, Merrily We Roll Along and Carousel. In this setting, it's quite easy to accept Nellie as an older, single gal serving as a nurse in the war and their chemistry is palpable as they dive in and out of dialogue and songs like "A Cockeyed Optimist" and "Some Enchanted Evening." Even better is Merrily and the marvelous finale built around Carousel.

In between we get numerous other tunes, with Patinkin reprising his Follies success "The God-Why-Don't-You-Love-Me Blues" and Lupone delivering a more measured "Everything's Coming Up Roses." They delight in numerous comic numbers like "Baby It's Cold Outside" and the novelty tune "April In Fairbanks" (unfamiliar to me, it's from New Faces Of 1956). This sort of thing can be tossed together in a minute but they've crafted it with care. Patinkin subtly and graciously showcases Lupone throughout, giving himself goofier turns a la "I Won't Dance."

Of course they tackle Evita, done in a smartly straightforward manner. He puts his arm around her and talks about how they met on that show and became fast friends. Patinkin then turns out a fiery, focused "Oh What A Circus" while she sits on the side and applauds. They switch and he admires Lupone as she acts her way through "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." As with several other points in the show, the audience is raptly quiet when these two command the stage. Almost as an aside, Lupone delivers a nicely modulated, moving "In Buddy's Eyes" shortly thereafter.

But the finale really is Carousel, in which these two people known so well for their distinctive, career-making voices remind us what exceptional actors they are. Patinkin is a would-be menacing Billy Bigelow who can't faze a more world-weary Julie Jordan, as embodied so nicely here by Lupone. Yes, they're playing kids but the emotions of warily reaching out to another are universal and timeless and for a scene or two, it works wonderfully.

"If I Loved You" and "You're A Queer One, Julie Jordan" are gems delivered beautifully, but I remember the emotions they evoke so deftly in the acting moments. Lupone tears up on a dime during Merrily and here her character's instant ability to see into Billy's awkward, confused heart is quite moving. And Patinkin delivers the commencement address from the finale of that show; it's advice to students and indeed anyone trying to live their life with purpose and dignity. He captures that moment so simply and directly and touchingly, it breaks your heart. It's the greatness of Rodgers & Hammerstein in a nutshell: a disarming truhfulness that slips past your defenses with ease. Corny in the hands of amateurs; moving in the hands of pros.

Lupone's trumpet of a voice is more muted now; Patinkin's swoops and moans and various voices from deep bass to high falsetto as familiar as ever. Acquired tastes? Of course, but we've been acquiring that taste for years. They don't break new ground or work wonders during this low-key, charming evening. They simply get on stage and perform. It's all they've ever wanted.

(AP) ? These are the kinds of negotiations NBA fans have been waiting for.

Teams began talking to agents Wednesday as the lockout inched closer to its end, and basketball moved back into focus. Dwight Howard and Chris Paul were linked to trade speculation, while free agents such as Tyson Chandler and Nene were in the news after months of attorneys getting all the ink.

Now, the players are taking over and the league was set to reopen its facilities for workouts Thursday.

Some may arrive out of shape, just as was the case in January 1999 after the NBA's only other shortened season. But they're anxious to get back, with a little more than three weeks until they start playing games.

"The guys are going to come in and I'm sure they're going to be in good shape. They want to play," new Houston coach Kevin McHale told reporters.

"These guys have played basketball their entire lives. They love to play basketball and they're excited to get after it."

The league still hopes to open training camps and free agency next Friday, leaving both sides scrambling to get business finished in time.

The lawsuits have been settled, contingent upon the ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement by Dec. 9. Players are in the process of collecting the signatures needed to approve the reformation of the union, which must be done before the sides can resume bargaining on the remaining issues that must be settled before each side can vote.

NBA officials are working to complete a two-game exhibition schedule for each team that will lead to a 66-game regular season, starting with a five-game slate on Christmas.

"Considering that a lot of this is brand new to us, the last 24 hours has been a little bit of a scramble," Oklahoma City general manager Sam Presti said. "We have a lot of things that we have to do from getting players in and just basically preparing ourselves for what's ahead."

Philadelphia 76ers president Rod Thorn was working in the league office during the last lockout and knows how much work it will take to stay on the schedule Commissioner David Stern revealed after reaching a tentative agreement with the players early last Saturday.

"I definitely remember that time and how hectic it was on the NBA side," Thorn said. "If you think it was hectic over here, it was really hectic on that side."

Trying to make the process smoother, the NBA agreed to allow players to re-enter the buildings Thursday. Coaches aren't allowed, but players, who will have to sign a waiver removing teams of liability in case of injury, can meet with the teams' training personnel and conduct unsupervised workouts. The decision was made in consultation with the union Tuesday, and league spokesman Tim Frank denied it had anything to do with the settlement of the litigation.

"We agreed that it was in everyone's interest that players have the opportunity to get back to work," he said.

The lockout began July 1, which would have been the opening of free agency. It finally arrived in a minimized form Wednesday morning, when teams were allowed to talk to agents. Contracts can't yet be offered or signed ? not that anyone is ready to rush into it as they digest the new signing and spending rules that will become official in the new deal.

Chandler, the starting center for NBA champion Dallas, and Denver's Nene headed a solid core of free agent big men. Jamal Crawford, the former top sixth man from Atlanta, was available for teams seeking backcourt scoring punch, and teams seeking a reliable veteran swingman could sort through Grant Hill, Shane Battier, Caron Butler and Tayshaun Prince.

But the class isn't spectacular, which is why the focus was already on next summer, when Howard, Paul and Deron Williams can become free agents.

There were reports that Paul planned to leave New Orleans, and that the teams were angling to trade for him. Nets general manager Billy King denied an ESPN.com report that he was preparing to offer Brook Lopez and two first-round picks to Orlando in hopes of getting Howard to play with Williams.

"I'll go on the record that I haven't talked to Orlando about a trade since February, right before the trade deadline," King said. "I have not had any conversations at all with my good friend Otis (Smith, the Magic general manager).

"So, I don't know where that is coming from."

The league could announce the opening-day schedule this week. The full regular-season schedule may not be unveiled until next week.

Samsung N102S netbook listed on UK sites for ?240, possibly with Cedar Trail

Even if Samsung plans to stop producing 10.1-inch netbooks from next year, there's still plenty of scope for new models in little ol' 2011. In fact, British online retailers have just put up listings for an N102S running an officially unknown Atom N2100 processor. This chip is rumored to be a low-power variant of Intel's delayed Cedar Trail line-up, which might explain why none of the retailers yet have firm information about availability. (We called the number above, they told us to ignore the bit about December 2nd.) Other listed specs include a distinctly last-gen 1GB of RAM, 320GB of HDD roominess and Windows 7 Starter Edition for £240 ($370).

Update: Netbook Italia also picked up on some Asus Cedar Trail Eee PCs in similar UK listings. These include the 1025CE we saw recently, which packs an N2800 processor for £270, plus a X101CH running on the N2600 for £225. Other specs are very similar to the Samsung's.

Samsung N102S netbook listed on UK sites for ?240, possibly with Cedar Trail originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 Nov 2011 07:35:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
