A small personal example. In the past two weeks, I have had occasion to reach out via email in two different customer service scenarios. In both cases, it took more than five days for the businesses to respond ? although they actually did in the end, which sort of shocked me (sad to say). Neither response had the effect of making me feel more favorably inclined toward the businesses. Both focused on excuses, not resolutions.

The irony is that both organizations that I contacted had basically forced me to use email, which is one of the fastest growing vehicles for customer touch. A newly published guide from ContactBabel (sponsored by Zeacom) called ??The U.S. Contact Center Decision-Maker?s Guide (2012 - 5th edition)? found that the use of email has jumped by 67 percent in the past five years, while the use of Web chat has grown by about 50 percent. Has your own company kept pace with that investment?

Here?s another question: What would you think about a business that took five days to call you back after you reported a customer service concern over the phone? My guess is you would have taken your business elsewhere on day two or day three.

News flash, people: Social media and social networks are changing the rules for customer service. Get with the program or all the marketing dollars you spend could be for naught.

That is one reason you will start to hear more about links between contact center applications, internal knowledge-sharing portals and (yes) external social networks. After all, if someone who doesn?t work for your company has come up with a good solution to a problem, why shouldn?t your agents share that solution?
Seamless escalation and interaction is necessary. If someone surfaces an issue in a social network, that issue should be exposed to customer service agents who can address it. Likewise, the company needs full knowledge of an ongoing issue, regardless of whether follow-up happens via phone, email, Web chat, a mobile application or social means.
Be proactive about communicating changes, issues and so on. The worst thing that any company can do is try to hide a problem. There are always exceptions, but most reasonable humans tend to be far more sympathetic to those who are honest about mistakes and forthright in their efforts to address or correct them. They have very little sympathy for cover-ups and non-apologies.

The Afghan parliament demanded Monday that a US soldier who went on a shooting spree and killed 16 villagers in their homes should be put on public trial in Afghanistan.

Sunday's massacre poses an acute test of the US-Afghan alliance, as the two countries pursue difficult talks on securing a strategic pact to govern their partnership once foreign combat troops leave Afghanistan in 2014.

"When Afghan people are killed deliberately by US forces, this action is murder and terror and an unforgivable action," Karzai said.

The program is free to vets, but a five percent fee from the pledges is payable to Sprigster to cover administrative fees. Vets, who must also have a significant financial stake in their business effort, may only raise money to purchase franchises from participating companies like ServiceMaster.

Assistant Fire Chief Cherie Penn said none of the building?s more than 30 residents had been injured. One firefighter was hurt slightly but remained on the scene. Crews were still trying to contain hot spots Friday afternoon, but there was no information about the fire?s cause, Penn said. The apartments were built in 1919, according to county tax records.

The other night, my wife and were finally able to get a reservation to Niche. ?I say it was a good restaurant. ?We looked at the desserts on the menu and they didn't really seem to pop out at us. ?We wanted someplace more. ?A selection of cakes and ice creams doesn't sound like much, especially my wife who gets homemade ice cream whenever she wants it in any flavor or style.

We decided to take the advice of our server and go to Taste, in Clayton, about a 5 minute drive away.

The building was small, a narrow space with a bar on one side, a two chef kitchen on the other end and an entry door that opens into utter darkness with a ramp. ?Taste, if you or anyone from your place is reading this, install a light in that entry way. That is a liability waiting to happen! ?The front entry door opens into a small, opening area, like a 5 by 5 foot area and the entry on the opposite end that goes into the bar, has two large, thick, black curtains that you have to part and walk through to get inside. ?That's great, but we didn't see it and how to get in. ?On our way out, my wife didn't see the ramp in the pitch blackness before we reached the outside door and she almost fell in there.

It is arranged like an underground English bar, not really a design I have ever seen before but little pieces from other places.

The picture is not a very good one, I admit. ?It is dark in this place. ?It is the kind of darkness that you cannot see the correct color your wine or mixed drink is. ?It is hard to describe your amazing drink's color when everything is 5 hues darker than they are supposed to.

Even though this is the bar where Ted Kilgore works at, and he is supposed to be amazing, he was way too busy for us to even notice. ?I also wonder, not in a way to say anything bad about anyone, but how can you judge a bartender or mixologist? ?I don't know if he came up with the drink list or if he just runs the place. ?We got our hands on two seats at the bar, after we tried to get our name on the list for a table and were given one bar seat while I had to stand, in the mean time. ?One of the most pointless moves: I personally cannot enjoy a bar or even a drink, when I have to stand directly behind someone and have little to no access to the bar or anything else.

We did get two spots on the bar and took advantage of those spots by ordering some desserts. My wife ordered the apple cobbler which was a very hot apple mix with a large amount of oats on top.

It was alright. ?I thought that there was too much oat or granola on top and not enough fruit. ?But I think it was good and we both enjoyed it. ?Probably give it a 2 out of 5.

This was a glass dish which was deep with a layer of lemon custard, lemon curd and then a shortbread on the bottom. ?It was tasty, very lemony and very much like a lemon?meringue?pie. ?It was good and I think my wife liked it better than the apple cobbler device. ?I'd say another 3 out of 5.

We both didn't really want to make that much of a fuss about this place until we could sit down at a table and enjoy some of the regular food. ?The two desserts we had and the one drink, wasn't enough to make me think that is is the best bar in St. Louis. ?Next time we come though, I'm bringing a flashlight for that front entry.

THURSDAY, March 8 (HealthDay News) -- Light-to-moderate alcohol consumption might reduce stroke risk in women, new research suggests.

For the study, U.S. researchers examined data from nearly 84,000 women who were part of the Nurses' Health Study. The women had no evidence of cardiovascular disease or cancer at the time of enrollment and were followed for up to 26 years.

The women provided information about their diet, alcohol consumption, lifestyle habits and stroke occurrences. During the follow-up, there were 2,171 cases of stroke among the women, Monik Jimenez and colleagues from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found.

About 30 percent of the women said they never drank alcohol, 35 percent said they were light drinkers, 37 percent said they were moderate drinkers, and 11 percent said they consumed more than the equivalent of one mixed drink per day.

Light drinking meant consuming less alcohol than what would be found in half a glass of wine daily, while moderate drinking meant an average of one-half to just over one glass of wine, one beer or one mixed drink daily, the study authors noted.

Women who were light or moderate drinkers had a lower risk of stroke than those who never drank, but this wasn't the case with higher levels of alcohol consumption, according to the study published online March 8 in the journal Stroke.

There are a number of ways that low-to-moderate alcohol consumption may reduce stroke risk, the researchers said in a hospital news release. Certain components of alcohol may prevent blood clots and cholesterol from accumulating in the arteries, both of which can lead to stroke.

But higher levels of alcohol consumption may increase the risk of high blood pressure and a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation, both of which are risk factors for stroke.

While the study uncovered an association between alcohol consumption and stroke risk in women, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

LOS ANGELES ? Jurors who entered the mysterious world of DNA evidence when they began hearing the case of ex-police detective Stephanie Lazarus have begun their deliberations with both the prosecution and defense asking them to consider more than just the genetic key.

The eight women and four men began their deliberations Tuesday after hearing two days of intense final arguments. They were to resume their talks Wednesday.

The statements by prosecutors and defense attorneys came on the heels of more than three weeks of testimony in a case that lay dormant for 26 years and was resurrected by the discovery of a bit of DNA taken from a bite mark on the arm of a slain woman.

In 1986, when Sherrri Rasmussen was found bludgeoned and shot to death in her condominium, DNA had not entered the language of courts or the forensic tool box of prosecutors.

Without the scientific discovery, Lazarus might never have been arrested. Her attorney noted in closing arguments that other evidence such as blood, fibers, hair and fingerprints from the crime scene could not be linked to her.

"There are so many questions and so few answers," said defense attorney Mark Overland. He suggested to jurors that the DNA, the heart of the prosecution case, should not be trusted because it was poorly packaged and stored over the decades.

"I've done all that I could. See if you can answer all the questions." said Overland. "Stephanie Lazarus now is in your hands."

But a prosecutor argued that DNA was only part of the case against the once respected policewoman.

"This case is a banquet of evidence and this is just one course," said Deputy District Attorney Shannon Presby. "This is not the only piece of evidence."

He pointed to bullets used in the crime that matched those issued to police officers -- even though Lazarus' gun was never found. And he spoke of Lazarus' consuming obsession with John Ruetten, the man who married Rasmussen three months before she was killed. A broken heart, he said, was one of the elements of this crime.

With a deathly pale Lazarus seated at the counsel table and her now white-haired ex-boyfriend in the courtroom audience, Presby showed a photo of the couple in their college days, dressed up for a party. Ruetten wears a flower in his lapel and both of them smile into the camera. Jurors also saw wedding pictures of Ruetten and Rasmussen.

Lazarus did not look at the courtroom screen where the photos were projected.

Presby ridiculed defense theories that Lazarus' DNA was planted in a test tube during the decades that it lay dormant in a freezer at the Los Angeles County Coroner's office.

"This is a ridiculous, farcical explanation," he said of claims of a DNA frame-up.

"What's the motive for framing Stephanie Lazarus? She was a police officer. She was liked by her family and friends."

He urged jurors to accept the theory that Lazarus' DNA wound up in a bite mark on the arm of the slain Rasmussen because "she bit Sherri when she attacked her."

Presby acknowledged the case is riddled with mysteries which may never be answered.

"What was the defendant thinking when she decided to go over there?" asked Presby. "...I don't know."

He argued that all questions don't need to be answered.

"It's not necessary to decide why the defendant went over there," he said. "It's interesting but it doesn't need to be answered."

He told jurors the only questions they must answer is whether Lazarus killed Rasmussen and "did she make a deliberate cold blooded decision to kill?"

At the time, Lazarus was a young police officer. By the time she was arrested in 2009, she had been promoted to detective, working in a unit that specializes in crimes involving art. She had married a fellow officer and had adopted a daughter.

Presby, the last lawyer to speak, countered the original police theory that Rasmussen was killed by burglars.

"This was not a burglary," he said. "But the defendant did steal from Sherri. She stole every day from that day to this with all the joy and pain that Sherri would have experienced. Everything that makes up a life the defendant stole."

He concluded, "I implore you to use your common sense. There's only one profile of a killer in this case. I ask you to do justice for Sherri Rasmussen and find the defendant guilty of first degree murder."

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A day of boisterous protests over cuts to higher education that included thousands of students swarming the state Capitol ended with dozens of arrests after demonstrators refused to leave the building.

Authorities on Monday evening arrested 68 people, most of whom will be charged with trespassing, the California Highway Patrol said. Four people were arrested earlier in the day.

Police started pulling out protesters who remained in the Capitol rotunda around 7:30 p.m., more than an hour after they began warning them with a bullhorn to leave.

Protesters chanted "We're doing this for your kids," as one by one they were lifted by the arms, handcuffed with plastic ties, and led away.

Students angry over steep tuition increases and fewer courses at California's public universities and colleges waved signs and chanted, "They say cut back; we say fight back."

Tuition has nearly doubled in the past five years, to $13,000 for resident undergraduates at University of California schools and to $6,400 at California State University schools. Community college fees are set to rise to $46 per unit by this summer, up from $20 per unit in 2007.

Democratic lawmakers addressed the group and lamented the deep cuts to higher education they have made in recent years.

"We were expecting to have a good future, but things are looking uncertain for a lot of families," said Alison Her, 19, a nursing student at California State University, Fresno. "I'm the oldest in my family, and I want my siblings to be able to go to college, too."

After the rally, hundreds of students lined up to enter the Capitol and filled conference rooms and hallways inside. Some met with lawmakers to lobby for increased funding for higher education, while others headed for the rotunda.

CHP officers allowed several hundred students to settle on the black and white marble floor of the rotunda before all four hallway entrances to the area were blocked. Another hundred students sat down in a hallway, communicating with fellow protesters by call and response.

Several lawmakers watched from a second-floor balcony as the protesters were later arrested.

Outside the Capitol, hundreds of protesters who had lingered into the evening disbursed after the arrested protesters were taken away in vans. Officers in riot gear guarded the underground exits where they were taken out.

Earlier in the day, three women were arrested for disobeying an officer's order after trying to unfurl a banner on the second floor. A man was arrested outside the building for being in possession of a switchblade knife, the CHP said.

Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement that the protest highlights the need for California voters to approve a tax increase he has proposed for the November ballot.

"The students today are reflecting the frustrations of millions of Californians who have seen their public schools and universities eroded year after year," said Brown, a Democrat. "That's why it's imperative that we get more tax revenue this November."

Brown's initiative would fund education and public safety programs by temporarily raising income taxes on people who make more than $250,000 a year and temporarily increasing the sales tax by half a cent.

The University of California Student Association has endorsed a rival initiative that would tax millionaires and earmark the revenue for education. The California Federation of Teachers and state PTA support that initiative.

Buses brought hundreds of students in for Monday's march from as far away as the University of California, Riverside, 450 miles south of Sacramento.
