Prey for China?s endangered wild Amur tigers released on Global Tiger Day

Wangqing, China ? Over 30 captive-bred red and sika deer have been released into the wild in Northeast China?s Wangqing Nature Reserve to help repopulate the area with desirable prey, giving the country?s endangered wild Amur tigers plenty to celebrate on Global Tiger Day.

The release is part of a tiger recovery trial project run by WWF, the Jilin Provincial Forestry Department and the Wangqing Forestry Bureau and represents a crucial first step in providing the living conditions Amur tigers need to thrive in the reserve?s rugged Changbaishan area.?

?There is very little prey for the 20 Amur tigers now living in Changbaishan, and this limits their numbers in China. Increasing the breeding population of the prey will help attract more Amur Tigers in the long run,? said Fan Zhiyong, Director of WWF China?s species programme.??

One tiger needs to eat the equivalent of a medium size deer every week to survive and without adequate food, the tiger population rapidly declines. Many of Asia?s forests are already considered ?empty?, with many trees but few animals.

Fifty years of decline

Over the past fifty years, the population of wild Amur tigers in Northeast China has declined from an estimated 200 to 20 today, due to massive pressure from deforestation, economic development, and poaching.

There are an estimated 450 Amur tigers now living in the Russian Far East, but recent sightings show that the population is slowly moving across the Chinese border and into the country?s Wandashan and Changbaishan mountains, part of the Wangqing Nature Reserve.

However, a recent WWF-backed survey shows that the lack of prey is a major hurdle in supporting the settlement of tigers in Northeast China. The same survey shows that the number of ungulate animals in the Changbaishan area - especially favored prey such as red deer and sika deer - is too low to support the recovery of the Amur tiger population.

?Density of red deer and wild boar, for example, is only 0.3 per square kilometer, less than half the number in neighboring Russia. The low prey density in China means it would be extremely difficult for the area?s forests to support the recovery of the tiger population,? said Dr. Zhu Jiang, Head of WWF China?s Northeast Office.?

?Part of the solution is to increase the stock of available prey. We?re also working on habitat restoration, and stepping up monitoring to stop poaching,? noted Dr. Zhu. ?This initial trial will help create the conditions needed to support the survival of at least one female tiger within the Wangqing Nature Reserve.?

NCAA set to announce Central Florida investigation results

12:13 p.m. CDT, July 30, 2012

The NCAA Committee on Infractions is scheduled to announce Tuesday morning whether UCF will face additional penalties for major recruiting violations within the football and men's basketball programs.

"UCF is committed to winning with integrity and setting the standard for NCAA compliance," UCF spokesman Grant Heston said. "Tuesday?s announcement represents the latest step in our ongoing process."

Former UCF athletics director Keith Tribble and wide receivers coach David Kelly were forced to resign in November due to their ties to the investigation. UCF men's basketball coach Donnie Jones was suspended for three Conference USA games for failing to stop Caldwell from tampering with recruits, a process that began before he was hired and appeared to be sanctioned by Tribble. Former UCF point guard A.J. Rompza missed the first 12 games of the 2011-12 season because he received money from Caldwell, who had been his mentor since the fifth grade.

NCAA investigators alleged Ken Caldwell, a former Chicago club basketball coach, was affiliated with a professional sports agent and helped steer recruits to UCF.

The Knights self imposed a long list of sanctions, including vacating wins by the basketball program and reducing scholarships after it completed an investigation concurrent with the NCAA's review.

UCF appeared before the Committee on Infractions in April to discuss the case. Greg Sankey, associate commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and a committee member, will hold a teleconference Tuesday at 11 a.m. to discuss the NCAA's decision.

One of the most popular and reliable car manufacturers in the automotive industry right now is Honda. They are a popular Japanese car maker that has automotive plants all over the globe, including the US. One of Honda's most famous models is the Civic. However, Honda has also extended into the production of the sport-utility vehicle or SUV. At present, Honda's premiere SUV is the CR-V. The CR-V was originally built as a compact station wagon, but as the years have gone by, this vehicle has gradually transformed into a crossover and is currently sold to car finders in markets throughout the globe.honda

The Honda CR-V was introduced to the automotive market in 1995. The CR-V was originally intended to be a niche vehicle. That was due in part because Honda was hesitant in marketing this model on a large scale. Honda was uncertain if the CR-V would be capable of taking the place of the Honda Passport as an entry-level SUV in the U.S.honda

Honda's worries were put to rest after entering the CR-V in the 1996 Chicago Auto Show. Car buyers and enthusiasts alike had paid close attention to the CR-V, which was thought to be a good indication of potential sales. In addition to this, Honda also began taking note of the successes Toyota's RAV4 had achieved when it was released to the market.honda

Due to these factors, the CR-V was released in the US in 1997, alongside other SUVs, such as the Subaru Forrester. Since then, the CR-V has started building its reputation as an in-demand and reliable SUV. As of present, Honda is about to release their fourth generation Honda CR-V, which has many new exciting features that are being offered.honda

With all its success and popularity, there is still a question that remains uncertain about the Honda CR-V. What does "CR-V" mean? All through the years, Honda has yet to come up with a concrete answer as to what CR-V stands for. In fact there are a lot of interpretations as to what it stands for.honda

United States runner Sanya Richards-Ross speaks during a news conference at Olympic Park during the 2012 Summer Olympics, Monday, July 30, 2012, in London. Richards-Ross is one of the U.S. athletes who are part of a Twitter campaign demanding changes in Olympic Rule 40 ? which, among other things, does not permit athletes "to promote any brand, product or service within a posting, blog or tweet or otherwise on any social media platforms or on any websites." (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)

LONDON (AP) ? It's amazing how much trouble can be stirred up in 140 characters or less.

But also how much intimacy, excitement, global scope and, yes, general zaniness. For better and for worse, the 2012 Olympics are being shaped, shaken and indisputably changed by a social media revolution that four years ago in Beijing was in its toddlerhood.

Four days into the games, we've already seen (and this is but a partial list):

?an athletes' Twitter campaign objecting to sponsorship restrictions that went viral under the hashtag "WeDemandChange."

?a television viewers uprising over Olympic broadcaster NBC's decision not to live stream the opening ceremony.

?two athletes kicked out for racist tweets.

?a fan arrested Tuesday after a series of threatening posts, including one in which he vowed to drown a British diver, and another in which he told the athlete he had failed his dead father by not winning.

For Olympics organizers who pride themselves on putting on a carefully choreographed ? obsessively controlled, some would say ? 17-day show, the bursts of Twitter activity are like gamma rays escaping from a solar flare. They're impossible to stop and spellbinding to behold.

"I don't think we would seek to control it, nor could we," said International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams. He said more than 15 million fans are following and participating in the Olympic experience via Twitter and other social media platforms, not to mention a good proportion of the 10,800 athletes. "Used the right way, we embrace social media," he said. "And, if you look at the guidelines, we positively encourage it."

The problem is, it isn't always used that way.

The immediacy and public nature of Twitter and its propensity to induce off-the-cuff irreverence, and sometimes breathtaking ugliness, has added a new and chaotic element to an event where everything from urine samples to sponsors' logos to London traffic is arranged with overcaffeinated attention to detail worthy of a royal wedding.

"Though organizers have spent months touting this as the first social media Summer Games, many of them seem to have been totally unprepared for the huge impact that Twitter has had," said Andy Miah, director of the Creative Futures Institute at the University of the West of Scotland. "I think there was some naivete about the likely role of social media from both participants and from the organizers. Many of them appear to have been wrongfooted."

Twitter has been used in many ways during its brief life ? some very organized and tactical, some more spontaneous and disorderly. It has been a tool of protest and organization for the Occupy Wall Street movement and Arab Spring activists. Yet it has also led to the downfall of click-happy politicians, and the sometimes embarrassing late-night revelations of A-list celebrities.

The social network is now at the fingertips of 140 million users, up from a few million when the Olympics were held in Beijing in 2008. The San Francisco-based company says there have been more than 10 million tweets mentioning the Olympics during the first few days of the games. The exponential jump from four years ago has been driven by the rise of smartphones, now carried by spectators and athletes alike, each watching each other watch each other.

Which of course raises the question: When exuberant, often young athletes are going through the experience of their lives on one hand, and it's unfolding in a deeply controlled environment on the other, how do you make sure everyone gets what they need without it all turning to anarchy?

The IOC, Miah says, has tried to exert control by creating its own social media hub ? gathering athletes' tweets and posts from Facebook, the other formidable player in this landscape. But it hasn't always worked out as planned.

On Saturday, U.S. women's soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo launched a Twitter outburst against Brandi Chastain, the former American soccer player who is now an analyst on NBC. "Its 2 bad we can't have commentators who better represents the team&knows more about the game," Solo wrote.

Dozens of athletes, including some British soccer players, have taken to Twitter to promote their sponsors' products, a violation of Olympic rules that could theoretically lead to their expulsions. Some Olympians, undoubtedly delighting agents and marketers back home, have started an online campaign to get the rules changed.

And it's not just athletes who are stirring the stew of controversy.

British lawmaker Aidan Burley earned a sharp rebuke from fellow conservatives after he tweeted that Danny Boyle's critically acclaimed opening ceremony, which told the story of Britain's history in a rousing mix of music, symbolism and showmanship, was "leftie multicultural crap."

A British journalist said his Twitter account was blocked after he criticized NBC's coverage of the opening ceremony and posted the e-mail of a network executive. And thousands of disgruntled Olympics viewers set up hashtag "nbcfail" on Twitter to air complaints about the media company's coverage.

Then there's the teenager from Dorset who was arrested Tuesday after a series of offensive and, authorities say, menacing tweets directed at British Olympian Tom Daley. The suspect could be prosecuted under British law.

And yet Twitter has fast become an indispensable part of the Olympic scene. It is as valuable to today's spectators as programs and scorecards were to another generation, and it is just as important to the athletes seeking to connect with supporters from behind the Olympic curtain.

For young fans, "take away Twitter and you take away part of the experience," said Steve Jones, a professor who studies online culture and communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Olympians have used Twitter to tell supporters what they are eating, how they are feeling and who they are hanging out with. Jamaican mega-star Usain Bolt tweeted about his craving for chicken. American hurdler Lolo Jones revealed she's a virgin.

Perhaps that is too much information and intimacy for some, but Twitter, Facebook and their many copycats are not going anywhere, and it's time we got used to it.

Andy Hunt, the head of the British Olympic association, found himself dealing with a double whammy of Twitter eruptions ? defending his star diver against social-network vitriol while vowing to look into whether the host country's soccer players should be disciplined for using the site for "ambush marketing."

"I think everyone knows, if you use social media extensively, you have to accept you get bad as well as good," Hunt told journalists. "And sometimes bad is wholly unacceptable."

Veteran from Conway first to get military funeral thanks to new SC law

COLUMBIA -- A U.S. Army veteran from Conway who served for more than a decade but died alone three years ago has become the first serviceman given a military funeral under a new South Carolina law that aims to make sure everyone who serves honorably is buried with proper respect.

The law allows coroners or funeral directors with unclaimed remains to release information about the dead person to veteran and military groups to see if the deceased is a veteran who has earned a funeral and burial will full military honors.

Staff Sgt. John Rieser died in October 2009 in Conway. He was an only child and his parents had already passed away, so his remains went unclaimed. Rieser's co-workers at a convenience store near the trailer where he lived said Rieser was likely a veteran. Horry County Coroner Robert Edge wanted Rieser to get a proper burial, but he didn't know what to do.

His answer came this year with a bill pushed by two American Legion members. Larry Truax and John Bianchi are friends, motorcycle riders and native New Yorkers. They saw that their home state passed a law allowing the names of the dead not claimed by relatives to be checked for military service and decided South Carolina needed a similar law. The measure passed the state House and Senate with no opposition and was signed into law in May.

?We didn't want to see that happen to any veteran. We want any veteran who unfortunately didn't have anyone around to claim them to get the honors they deserve,? said Bianchi who served in the Air Force for nearly four years during the Korean War era.

The men helped prove Rieser was a veteran. Along with Edge, they helped arrange for a funeral at the Florence National Cemetery.

?I was amazed at what this community has done. They are so supportive and they are so proud of those who have served,? said cemetery director Carolyn Howard.

A headstone will be placed on Rieser's grave with his name, dates of birth and death, his service branch, rank and dates of service.

Officials don't know how many veterans could get funerals through the unclaimed remains law. Truax, Bianchi and friends at American Legion posts across the state are contacting funeral home associations and coroners to tell them about it.

?We want to give every guy and woman the treatment they deserved so they don't go unnoticed,? Bianchi said. ?They get the 21-gun salute, they get the flag, the chaplain ? the whole ceremony.?

Edge is letting other coroners know about the new law too. Horry County doesn't have a pauper's cemetery, so Edge didn't have to decide whether to keep Rieser's remains in storage or to bury them. Other coroners often bury remains to save money. Edge is thankful the law gives his colleagues another option.

?It's sad a lot of people end up like him with no family and their means of support are limited,? Edge said. ?He fought for the country and it's something he worked for and deserved.?

PLS English Users: STEVE JOBS And his Secret Presentation Skills

Throughout the world, many people in business still continue to be fascinated by Steve Jobs and his remarkable of legacy as a revolutionary innovator, clear communicator and presenter of ideas.

And yet, few embrace this simplicity when they have to give business presentations.

The fact is: the late?Steve Jobs did not sell computers; he sold an experience. The same holds true for his presentations. If you study them, you will see that they are meant to inform, educate, and entertain. An Apple presentation has all the elements of a great theatrical production?a great script, heroes and villains, stage props, breathtaking visuals, and one moment that makes the price of admission well worth it.

Here are the five elements of every Steve Jobs presentation. We invite English Users to incorporate these elements into your own presentations to sell your product or ideas the Steve Jobs way. Here are the highlights:

1. A headline. Steve Jobs positions every product with a headline that fits well within a 140-character Twitter post. For example, Jobs described the MacBook Air as "the world's thinnest notebook." That phrase appeared on his presentation slides, the Apple Web site, and Apple's press releases at the same time. What is the one thing you want people to know about your product? This headline must be consistent in all of your marketing and presentation material.

2. A villain. In every classic story, the hero fights the villain. In 1984, the villain, according to Apple, was IBM (IBM). Before Jobs introduced the famous 1984 television ad to the Apple sales team for the first time, he told a story of how IBM was bent on dominating the computer industry. "IBM wants it all and is aiming its guns on its last obstacle to industry control: Apple." Today, the "villain" in Apple's narrative is played by Microsoft (MSFT). One can argue that the popular "I'm a Mac" television ads are hero/villain vignettes. This idea of conquering a shared enemy is a powerful motivator and turns customers into evangelists.

3. A simple slide. Apple products are easy to use because of the elimination of clutter. The same approach applies to the slides in a Steve Jobs presentation. They are strikingly simple, visual, and yes, devoid of bullet points. Pictures are dominant. When Jobs introduced the MacBook Air, no words could replace a photo of a hand pulling the notebook computer out of an interoffice manila envelope. Think about it this way?the average PowerPoint slide has 40 words. In some presentations, Steve Jobs has a total of seven words in 10 slides. And why are you cluttering up your slides with too many words?

4. A demo. Neuroscientists have discovered that the brain gets bored easily. Steve Jobs doesn't give you time to lose interest. Ten minutes into a presentation he's often demonstrating a new product or feature and having fun doing it. When he introduced the iPhone at Macworld 2007, Jobs demonstrated how Google Maps (GOOG) worked on the device. He pulled up a list of Starbucks (SBUX) stores in the local area and said, "Let's call one." When someone answered, Jobs said: "I'd like to order 4,000 lattes to go, please. No, just kidding."

5. A holy smokes moment. Every Steve Jobs presentation has one moment that neuroscientists call an "emotionally charged event." The emotionally charged event is the equivalent of a mental post-it note that tells the brain, Remember this! For example, at Macworld 2007, Jobs could have opened the presentation by telling the audience that Apple was unveiling a new mobile phone that also played music, games, and video. Instead he built up the drama. "Today, we are introducing three revolutionary products. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device?an iPod, a phone, an Internet communicator?an iPod, a phone, are you getting it? These are not three devices. This is one device!" The audience erupted in cheers because it was so unexpected, and very entertaining. By the way, the holy smokes moment on Sept. 9 had nothing to do with a product. It was Steve Jobs himself appearing onstage for the first time after undergoing a liver transplant.

One more thing?sell dreams.

Charismatic speakers like Steve Jobs are driven by a nearly messianic zeal to create new experiences. When he launched the iPod in 2001, Jobs said, "In our own small way we're going to make the world a better place." Where most people saw the iPod as a music player, Jobs recognized its potential as a tool to enrich people's lives. Cultivate a sense of mission. Passion, emotion, and enthusiasm are grossly underestimated ingredients in professional business communications, and yet, passion and emotion will motivate others. Steve Jobs once said that his goal was not to die the richest man in the cemetery. It was to go to bed at night thinking that he and his team had done something wonderful. Do something wonderful.

Make your presentations engaging.

There is a new book about this topic, written by Carmine Gallo. Check it out! The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs

Weigh In On Obesity Problem | Children's Health and Fitness

From The Dickerson Press?..

By a scant 2 pounds, I have slipped inadvertently into the ?fat? category as defined by the Body Mass Index. That makes me partly responsible for the 80 percent increase in the number of fat and obese people in North Dakota over the past 15 years.

Some folks are fat because they don?t have the spunk to fight their ancestral genes; others are fat because they were raised on French fries and carbohydrates; still others are fat because they stopped working and kept eating. Regardless of the alibi, fat creates all kinds of public problems.

Treating obese patients is terribly expensive. I heard that an obese person with appendicitis made it necessary for the Williston hospital to call a fracking engineer from the oil field to help find the inflamed organ. Do you have any idea what a fracking engineer costs?

At the Fargo airport, an obese gentleman had to go through the body scanner twice to get total body coverage.

In a fit of mindless courage, Mayor Mike Bloomberg announced that New York was taking charge of the fat problem by banning soda (pop) sales of over 16 ounces to kids. Of course, the guzzlers and their mothers protested.

?It?s nobody?s business if we let our kids get fat,? they protested.

Financial Accounting: Bridging Finance and Bridging Loans

The global financial condition is decreasing each day. Therefore, most financial brokers take extra pain to assist all clients with huge support in loan solutions. There are many dimensions to borrowing bridging loan, and hence, this article hopes to help you in visualizing the entire approach in getting help with bridging finance and bridging loans.

There are unlimited loan brokerages or companies that offer significant variations in loan rates. The usual loan rates for bridging loans and full status loans begin approximately at 5.50% per year. This rate is, however, different for the no proof income loans and, therefore, those rates are 0.75% each month the normal rate. Bridging loans are a short term funding solution used inevitably to meet your needs as you transition from selling your existing property to buying a new house.

The bestbridgingloans.com has great information on securing this type of loan for a short time. This type of loans is usually used for residential and commercial property investment. There is also an opportunity to use this type of loan to invest in overseas properties limited to terms and conditions given by the company.

The open and closed bridging loans are the two types of loans. The closed bridging loans are ideal when you plan to sign the contract for your new property. There is a transition period between buying the property and selling the existing one. This makes use of loan effective, because you can pay the loan off when you have access to your funds from the existing property. These loans do not require proof of income, so you do not need to worry if you are currently jobless.

Open bridging loan can be your last option, when all the other opportunities are not available or when other options fail. This type of loan can be used to buy an auction property only to resell or refurbish the property within a year. The advantage of this loan is that there is no pressure or time limit in paying the loan in return. You are in control of the time; however, it is best to clear the open bridging as soon as possible.

There is always negative and positive consequence to every decision you take. It is the same with the decision on the loan. You have all the information on different types of bridging loans, but you are in control of weighing the bad and good in making an application on the loans. Bridging finance can be your friends in time of your need; nonetheless, these loans also remind you the responsibility of paying them back in time. More information can be found on www.bestbridgingloans.com this will give you insight on the types of bridging loans.

Can't 'find your friends' on Instagram? Go cry to Twitter

13 hrs.

Tracking down your Twitter buddies among Instagram's 80 million users is now tougher than ever?? because the photo-sharing service's "Find Your Friends" feature is kaput. And Twitter appears to be at fault.

As TechCrunch's Alexia Tsotsis reports,?the "Find Your Friends"?feature ? which is buried within your Instagram app's settings ? is now useless "due to API restrictions from Twitter's end."

In plain terms??In order to find your Twitter friends, Instagram needed to snag some data from Twitter. And for some reason, Twitter decided to change the locks.

In fact, if you stubbornly?do try to find your Twitter friends on Instagram right now, a little pop-up message will offer that very?same explanation:

Unable to Find Friends?

Twitter no longer allows its users to access this information in Instagram via the Twitter API. We apologize for any?inconvenience.

We reached out to Twitter to see if the social network had anything to say about this change?? which is pretty darn awkward if you consider that Twitter founder Jack Dorsey happens to be an Instagram investor?? but we have not heard back yet. We?will update once we do.

In the meantime, we'll just point out that this isn't the first time something like this has happened. As Tsotsis recalls, "Facebook has done similar to Twitter in past years. For example, it blocked Twitter?s access to Facebook?s in-app friend finder feature in June of 2010."?

Amusingly, Instagram was recently acquired by Facebook. Guess what goes around?comes around.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Advice On Buying Granite Countertops

Advice On Buying Granite Countertops

Never Buy Used ? The problem with buying used granite is that you don?t know much about it. Some granite will start to fade if not taken care of and others will be cracked in certain places and if you didn?t know what the granite looked like before, then you won?t notice a crack until it changes.

Know What Your Buying ? If you don?t know much about granite, then you need to either learn or buy from a trusted seller. This will greatly benefit you because some granite yards will try to take advantage of people who don?t know much about it and are just looking for a deal.

Take Your Time ? The last thing that you need to do is just take your time. Some people try to rush into buying the first granite countertops they see and that doesn?t work. Even if this is the deal of a lifetime, take your time as this might not look right in your house or it might not be big enough to cover your entire counter.

If you want to buy the best granite countertops around, then you need to take your time and make sure you choose the right ones. There are a lot of different types of granite out there and the decision that you make will have a huge impact on the way your countertops look.

A moth with a foot-wide wingspan?!

The word "moth" may conjure up images of drab brown insects sticking to your screen door on a summer night. But there's much more to these mostly nocturnal fliers than meets the eye.

Not only are moths extraordinarily diverse in color, shape and size, said David Moskowitz, a New Jersey entomologist and organizer of the first annual National Moth Week (July 23-29), they also offer a huge array of ecological benefits, from pollinating plants to feeding birds, bats and even people around the globe.

OurAmazingPlanet has rounded up seven fascinating facts about these misunderstood insects:

1. There are more than 11,000 species of moths in the U.S. alone.
Moths outnumber butterflies, their nearest relative, by more than 10 to 1, said Matthew Shepherd, communications director and senior conservation associate at the Xerces Society, a nonprofit organization focused on insect conservation in Portland, Ore. There are upward of 11,000 moth species in the United States alone ? that's more than all the bird and mammal species in North America combined.

Moths can range in size from smaller than a pencil tip to bigger than a songbird. The Atlas Moth, of Southeast Asia, considered the largest in the world, has a wingspan of nearly a foot (30 centimeters) ? more than that of a Baltimore oriole. The Royal Walnut Moth, one of the biggest North American species, has a wingspan of about 4.5 inches (11 cm). [Images: Ancient Moth Colors]

2. Moths make great mimics.
Some moths are notorious for their ability to impersonate other animals. To avoid being eaten, some moths have evolved to look like less palatable insects, such as wasps, tarantulas and the praying mantis. Some moths even mimic bird droppings.

3. Moths are important pollinators.
While some moths, particularly caterpillars such as the corn earworm, are major agricultural pests, many others are important pollinators. "Their hairy bodies make moths great pollinators ? they pick up pollen from any flower they land on," Moskowitz said.

Moth-pollinated flowers tend to be fragrant and white, such as the yucca plant. Plants with these features allow nocturnal moths to easily find flowers after dark.

Some moths pollinate by day. Hummingbird moths hover in front of flowers and unfurl their long tongues to sip nectar; they feed on a variety of flowers, including bee balm, honeysuckle and verbena.

4. Many adult moths don't eat.
While some moths suck nectar, others don't eat at all. The adult Luna moth, for instance, doesn't even have a mouth. After it emerges from its cocoon, it lives for about a week. Its sole mission in life? To mate and lay eggs.

5. A male moth can smell a female more than 7 miles away.
Though they lack noses, moths are expert sniffers. They detect odor molecules using their antennae instead of through nostrils.? Male giant silkworm moths have elaborate, feather-shaped antennae with hairlike scent receptors that allow them to detect a single molecule of a female moth's sex hormone from 7 miles (11 kilometers) away.

    1. 'Maiden' Inca mummy had lung infection

The so-called Maiden mummy of a 15-year-old Incan girl who was sacrificed 500 years ago is giving up some secrets, revealing the teenager suffered from a bacterial lung infection at the time of her death, scientists report Wednesday.

    2. Scared of spiders? Well, brace yourself...

6. They are important food for many animals.
Because of their abundance, moths are major players at the bottom of the food chain. "They're a huge source of food for bats," Shepherd told OurAmazingPlanet.

In fact, some moths have evolved defenses against their winged predators. Tiger moths produce ultrasonic clicking sounds that effectively jam bat sonar, inhibiting the bat's ability to find them.

"Caterpillars are one of the most important things that moths offer in the ecosystem," Shepherd said. "They are food for everything else."

An estimated 95 percent of nesting birds rear their young on insects, and caterpillars make up a significant part of that, Shepherd said.

7. Moths: The next superfood?
In some parts of the world, moths are a major food source for people too. More than 90 percent of people in some African countries eat moth and butterfly caterpillars, according to a 2004 survey by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Caterpillars are packed with protein and healthy fats, and research shows that 100 grams of these insects provides more than 100 percent of the daily requirement of some vital minerals, such as potassium, calcium, zinc and iron.

TARP bailout was worse than you think, former inspector says

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

Most Americans have a sense TARP was a badly managed program that bailed out "fat cat" bankers at the expense of U.S. taxpayers. Well, it's even worse than you think, according to Neil Barofsky, former special inspector general for TARP (SIGTARP).

Officials in both the Bush and Obama administrations took the attitude "bankers know best," Barofsky recalls. "It was somewhat shocking how much control big banks had over their own bailout [and] the overwhelming deference show by Treasury officials to the banks."

Much has been made about Barofsky's criticism of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who told CBS News he is "deeply offended" by how he's portrayed in Barofsky's book Bailout: An Inside Account of How Washington Abandoned Main Street While Rescuing Wall Street.

Barofsky pulled no punches in our earlier segment about the ongoing rate-rigging scandal. (See: "I Hope We See People In Handcuffs": Neil Barofsky Weighs in on LIBOR Scandal)

In the accompanying video, we focused more on TARP's failings to live up to its promise to help individual Americans, not just the big banks.

Congress never would've passed TARP if not for programs included in the program to help homeowners facing foreclosure and generally spur bank lending. "TARP was an abysmal failure on those very important goals the reason why they got that money to give to the banks in the first place," Barofsky says.

TARP "did help prevent financial Armageddon," he concedes. "But there's a reason why Congress required and Treasury promised TARP would do a lot more. It's not complicated to take hundreds of billions [of dollars] and pour them into institutions ... and they don't fail. You really can't evaluate TARP" exclusively on how it impacted the banks.

Similarly, Barofsky takes offense to Treasury's repeated proclamations that TARP has been profitable.

While the big banks have paid back their loans, the overall program is now projected to lose somewhere between $32 billion to $70 billion, with $109.1 billion owed as of June 30, according to SIGTARP. Most of those losses are tied to AIG -- Treasury still own 61% of the company -- but more than half of the 325 banks that received TARP aid have missed dividend or interest payments.

"The bottom line is [the government] still expects tens of millions of losses on TARP," Barofsky says. "The losses are a lot less than originally anticipated but this resorting to trickery really shows you they're trying to cover up how badly TARP has failed in its other goals of helping homeowners and increasing lending to the economy."

Water jumping microbot proves anything bugs can do, robots can do too

Bugs are creepy. You don't need to be an entomophobe to empathize with that sentiment. But bugs are also inspiring -- to researchers in China, that is. Taking a cue from nature, a team of engineers from the country's School of Chemical Engineering and Technology have devised a microbot weighing just 0.02 lbs (11 grams) that can repeatedly jump across the surface of water without tanking. How'd they do it? Well, by using a highly repellent foam coating, the strider-like bot's legs are able to stay afloat with every 5.5 inch (14 cm) leap it makes, buffering the force that would normally plunge it below the H20. The creation of this hydrophobic mini-insectoborg isn't exactly the first of its kind, other aquatic gliders have come before, but this itty bitty fella's the first to successfully and repeatedly hop along an aqueous top. Unfortunately, there's no video demo for you to feast your eyes upon, so you'll just have to take our word for it.
