Review ? Rock-rap-reggae band leaves audience clamoring for more.
When I told people I was going to review 311?s show at the USANA Amphitheatre, I invariably got one response: there?s going to be a lot of marijuana smoking at that show.
Now that the show is over, I?m not sure how much pot there ultimately was (if any?), but I will say this: for an hour and a half set, 311 was smoking.

Hailing originally from Nebraska but channeling what I think of as a distinctly So-Cal sound, 311 has more than two decades of experience and 10 studio albums under its belt. An eleventh album is due out next year.
After that much time and that many albums ? including the iconic, triple platinum self-titled 1995 record that was part of the soundtrack to a whole bunch of people?s adolescence ? it?s safe to say that alternative rock as a genre has meandered away from 311?s brand of rock-rap-reggae. And so, like many mid-career bands, the question becomes how well they?ve held up.
The answer for 311 is ... surprisingly well.
To the delight of a lot of Daisy Duke clad girls and guys in puffy skater shoes, vocalists Nick Hexum and Doug "SA" Martinez spent basically the entire set marching across the stage as they pulled out an array of old and new songs. They ran around so much, in fact, that just minutes into the show when they played "Transistor" ? the title track from their 1997 album ? a battery of white spotlights left them glistening with sweat.
The band members kept it up for the whole set, showing that they are, if nothing else, still working very, very hard. (As if that wasn?t already apparent from their Unity Tour, which this year crams 23 shows all over the U.S. into barely more than a month.)
As the show progressed, 311 kept a tight focus on the music, barely talking between songs except to thank attendees and tell them they were the best yet of the tour. Perhaps they say that to every audience. But in any case the band seems to have honed their show to exactly what people want: music, a good stage show and not much else.
Later, drummer Chad Sexton launched into a lengthy drum solo while the other band members retreated off stage. And bucking the trend set by the vast majority of rock and roll drum solos, this one didn?t feel boring or pointless. Instead it was playful, and the audience ate it up.
Soon, the rest of the band joined Sexton onstage, but sans instruments. Instead, stage hands wheeled drums, cymbals and even cowbells out from the shadows. For the next five minutes, the entire band banged along with Sexton.

Later solos were slightly less well-received, with audience members sitting down or going on quick beer runs. But maybe that was the point; with a long set, 311 seemed to have timed their solos, hits and lesser known songs to please everyone.
The band also suffered slightly from a PA that muffled the vocals; with such a large discography, it would have been nice to be able to hear the lyrics a little better on those less known songs.
But minor issues like that didn?t seem to dampen anyone?s mood. By the time 311 finished up their set with the hit "Down," the pit in front of the stage was, if possible, more crowded and explosive than when the show began. Then, before the band even had time to leave the stage, the audience clamored for more.
The band obliged, playing "Amber," "You Wouldn?t Believe," and "Creatures" during an encore.

Accused Rapist Served as Teacher's Assistant at Rogers Church
ROGERS, AR - A former community volunteer is facing several rape charges and police worry more victims could be out there.
Police say the man volunteered regularly at Rogers First Church of the Nazarene.
They don't know if he targeted children there, but they want anyone with information to contact them.
Floyd Dorsey III, who also goes by Trey, was recently arrested in Kansas where he had moved.
He's accused of assaulting three women, now aged 15 to 22, who were all juveniles at the time of the incidents, according to Rogers Police.
According to the church, Dorsey actually served as a teacher's assistant in a children's classroom, but was never left unsupervised with the kids.
The church released a statement Monday, saying Dorsey has been removed from a volunteer position in the food pantry, and that while the congregation's hearts go out to the victims, they have not received any complaints from parents or anyone else about the man's actions while he was volunteering.
Still, police want to hear from anyone with information about Dorsey.
"We have right now our worries, concerns that maybe something did happen," says Keith Foster with the Rogers Police Department. "We don't know for sure and that's why we're encouraging people to call if anything has happened."
According to court documents, Dorsey told one of the victims he was a sick man at the time of the abuse, and his volunteer work was an attempt to become a better person.

'Hobbit' sequels wrap up filming in New Zealand
SYDNEY (AP) ? Peter Jackson has wrapped up filming "The Hobbit" trilogy and shared pictures of his last day on the set with his Facebook fans.
The New Zealand filmmaker provided a steady stream of updates and photos from the set of the final film, "The Hobbit: There And Back Again," on Friday. The second film, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," will be released in December, and the finale appears in 2014.
The director posted pictures of dwarves, crew members and actor Martin Freeman, who plays the protagonist, hobbit Bilbo Baggins. The photo updates began and ended with pictures of Jackson's cat, Mr. Smudge. The final photo shows the director and feline cuddling, along with the caption: "A long day. A great day. Thank you all for being part of it! Now for some sleep!"
"The Hobbit," based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novel of the same name, is the prequel to Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings." It follows Baggins' adventures as he tries to help a group of dwarves regain their wealth and stature from the dragon Smaug.
The first film in the trilogy, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," opened in December 2012 and surpassed $1 billion in box-office receipts worldwide.

Check This Out: One Couple's Great Movie Poster Wedding Invitations

We've seen plenty of fanmade movie posters come across our eyes, but these posters take a love for film to the next level. Joshua Watson and his wife Rachel Van Der Merwe decided to inform their friends of their engagement and impending festivities for the marriage by recreating the movie posters from some of their favorite films like Inception, An Education and Walk the Line. With photographs from Jordan Nakamura, the posters are flawlessly recreated featuring Josh and Rachel in the images themselves along with some of their wedding party, a few clever "review" quotes and taglines and some fine Photoshop work.
The engagement takes a cue from the poster for An Education:

And finally, the reception is hyped by using Inception and an awesome "review" quote:
There are a couple other posters that utilize the TV shows "How I Met Your Mother" and "Mad Men," and you can see those at Jordan Nakamura's Tumblr (via Movies.com). On the project, Nakamura writes, "It was fun shooting with these two playing roles in some of their favorite films and television shows, and we even were able to trick Google image search." This is the kind of fine work that makes other couples jealous, and I sincerely hope that my nuptials are hyped just as stylishly. A Star Wars wedding just seems a little too far on the nerd side of things, but clever cinematic inspired invitations like this arejust awesome. Cool stuff?

Differences small between student loan bills
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House is set to go along with a bipartisan Senate compromise that would link college students' interest rates to the financial markets and offer borrowers lower rates this fall.
The Senate bill hews closely to one the House already has passed, and leaders from both parties and in both chambers expect those differences won't stand in the way of quick resolution, perhaps as early as Wednesday.
House approval would send the measure to President Barack Obama, who has said he would sign it into law "right away."
But critics note that if the economy improves, as expected, rates could climb higher.
If the Republican-led House consents to the Senate's tinkering with the House's earlier proposal, and Obama signs the legislation before students start returning to campus, families would see better deals on some federal loans this year than they did in 2012. Undergraduates could borrow at rates as low as 3.4 percent for subsidized Stafford loans and 6.8 percent on unsubsidized Stafford loans last year, while graduate students and parents borrowed at 7.9 percent last year.
Those 3.4 percent rates doubled on July 1 because Congress did not act. Lawmakers from both parties said the rate increase was unacceptable and worked on various proposals to extend rates, overhaul rates and even remake the entire program before classes start this fall.
Both chambers would link the interest rate to the 10-year Treasury note plus an added percentage, based on the type of loan. Each sets caps on how high the loans can go.
But under the Senate bill, once a student or parent takes a loan for the school year the rate would not change. The House bill would make the interest rate variable, meaning it could change every year until the loan is repaid.
A look at what the House and Senate bills would mean for students and their parents:
UNDERGRADUATES:
Senate: Undergraduates who take subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans would pay the 10-year Treasury note, plus an additional 2.05 percent. That would put the interest rate at about 3.9 percent this fall. Rates would be capped at 8.25 percent.
House: Under the House bill, undergraduates who take subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans would pay the 10-year Treasury note, plus an additional 2.5 percent. That would translate to an interest rate of about 4.3 percent interest rates for loans taken this fall. Rates would be capped at 8.5 percent.
GRADUATE STUDENTS:
Senate: Graduate students would borrow at the interest rate of the 10-year Treasury notes plus an additional 3.6 percent. That would bring 5.4 percent interest rates for borrowers this fall. Rates would be capped at 9.5 percent.
House: Graduate students and parents would borrow at the 10-year Treasury note plus an additional 4.5 percent. Under this formula, graduate student loans this fall would carry a 6.3 percent interest rate. Rates would be capped at 10.5 percent.
PARENTS AND SOME GRADUATE STUDENTS:
Senate: Parents and some graduate students would borrow at the 10-year Treasury note plus an additional 4.6 percent. That works out to a 6.4 percent interest rate for fall term. Rates would be capped at 10.5 percent.

Florida Reports 23 Cases Of Cyclospora

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida health officials say they're investigating 23 cases of a stomach bug that has infected more than 320 people in 14 states and New York City.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most of the cyclospora infections occurred from mid-June to early July. It's not clear whether the cases are all linked.
Cyclospora causes diarrhea and other flu-like symptoms. The illness spreads when people ingest foods or water contaminated with feces. Previous outbreaks of cyclospora infections have been linked to various types of fresh vegetables and berries.
None of the patients in Florida have been hospitalized. The state's Department of Health says none of the Florida cases have a restaurant, food or social gathering in common

A graduated income tax would help reduce debt
Do Republican lawmakers really want the 5 percent state income tax rolled back to 3.75 percent, despite the state's huge debt? Or do they just want to complain about broken promises because the 2011 tax hike was called temporary?
What about the broken promises to public employees and retirees? The cost of pension reform has already been a 4 percent tax increase for retired workers to pay for the health care they were promised would be free. Another 3 percent of the promised pension will be cut each year if cost-of-living increases are eliminated.
Pension reform also proposes a 2 percent tax increase (from 8 to 10 percent in the form of an increased employee contribution) for all current public employees. If they were in the Social Security system, they would only pay 6.2 percent for retirement. Are public employees' retirements benefits promised?
The state owes the pension system, not the other way around. The state, not the pension participants, should pay the debt.
A graduated state income tax, already used in 34 other states, would help bring down the debt. Republicans controlled state government when the greatest damage was done to the pension system. Republican lawmakers should support allowing the voters of Illinois to decide whether to adopt a graduated tax.

Authorities: Photos show Hernandez holding gun
ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) ? Surveillance photos captured hours before ? and minutes after ? his friend was shot to death show former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez holding a gun, authorities said.
The photos, taken from Hernandez's home surveillance system, are the public's first look at images that appear to show Hernandez holding a gun both before and after the killing. They were among more than 100 pages of court records released Thursday by Attleboro District Court.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old Boston semi-professional football player whose body was found June 17 in an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez's home. He was shot five times.
One of Hernandez's associates in the case, Ernest Wallace, was scheduled to make a court appearance Friday morning. Prosecutors say Wallace and another man, Carlos Ortiz, drove with Hernandez and Lloyd to the industrial park in North Attleborough.
Authorities believe Lloyd was killed with a .45-caliber Glock, which they have said hasn't been recovered. Prosecutors said previously that a gun Hernandez is seen holding in the home surveillance appears to be a Glock.
Four pictures show Hernandez in his basement holding a gun shortly after Lloyd was killed, an affidavit released Thursday says. The surveillance was cut off within minutes.
Two other photos show what authorities say is Hernandez in his living room, a few hours before Lloyd's killing, also holding what they say is a gun.
Prosecutors previously only described the photos in court and in affidavits.
Authorities recovered an ammunition clip for .45-caliber bullets in Hernandez's Hummer as well as ammunition of the same caliber inside a condo he rented in Franklin, Mass.
The previously sealed documents were released after several media organizations, including The Associated Press, filed motions seeking access and Judge Daniel O'Shea agreed Wednesday that they are public records.
Defense attorneys have objected to the unsealing of the records, saying it is "systematically undermining" Hernandez's right to a fair trial.
On Wednesday, O'Shea also delayed a probable cause hearing for Hernandez to give prosecutors more time to present evidence in the murder case to a grand jury. That hearing was rescheduled for Aug. 22.
Hernandez will continue to be held without bail until then.
Prosecutors say Hernandez orchestrated Lloyd's killing because he was upset at him for talking to people Hernandez had problems with at a nightclub a few days earlier.
Authorities have not said who fired the shots, but documents filed in Florida portray the former Patriot as the triggerman. According to the records, Ortiz told police that Wallace said Hernandez fired the shots.
Wallace has pleaded not guilty to a charge of being an accessory to murder after the fact. Ortiz has pleaded not guilty to a gun charge.
The Patriots released Hernandez within hours of his arrest.
Speaking at length Thursday for the first time since Hernandez's arrest, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said the team has had a "challenging offseason" and that it must work hard to "re-establish what we're all about."
The University of Florida, where Hernandez played in college, said it is removing all references to him in and around the stadium in Gainesville. The University Athletic Association said in a statement it "didn't feel it was appropriate to celebrate" the former Gator.

Utah teen survives train crash, describes 'gruesome' scene
Stephen Ward, an 18-year-old who survived this week's train crash in Spain that killed 78 people, described the incident saying, "It felt like a rollercoaster."

Seconds before the Spanish train he was aboard lifted off the tracks "like a roller coaster," Mormon missionary Stephen Ward said he glanced up from the journal he was writing and noticed a backpack tumble from a rack. Moments later, he blacked out as the train smashed into a concrete wall at high speed.?
He awoke to a scene that seemed like a nightmare.?
"Everyone was covered in blood, there was smoke coming up off the train," said Ward, 18, of Bountiful, Utah. "There was a lot of crying, a lot of screaming. There were plenty of dead bodies. It was quite gruesome, to be honest."?

Ward was one of at least five Americans hurt Wednesday when the train hurtled off the rails and smashed into a security wall. One American died, the U.S. State Department said. The American victim was identified by the Diocese of Arlington as Ana Maria Cordoba, an administrative employee from northern Virginia.?
Ward said an information screen for passengers showed that the train was traveling 194 kph (121 mph) moments before the crash.
He said that speed was nearly double the speed they had been cruising at since leaving Madrid earlier that afternoon.?

The train was traveling fast when it derailed Wednesday and killed dozens, but officials haven't yet confirmed how fast. An Associated Press analysis of security camera video of the crash indicated the train hit the bend at the crash site going twice the speed limit or more.?

Four years earlier, Ward was diagnosed with a rare cancer known as Burkitt's lymphoma and nearly died while undergoing a bone marrow transplant.?
"From a religious standpoint, I'd like to say that God has something in store for me and that there's a reason I'm still here," Stephen Ward said in a phone interview with The Associated Press from La Coruna, Spain. "I count myself very lucky and very blessed to have been able to survive so many things."?
Ward said he suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck but has been discharged from the hospital. He expects to stay in Spain to complete his two-year mission with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which he started six weeks ago.?
On Wednesday, Ward was supposed to board an earlier train from Madrid to El Ferrol, a coastal city in northwest Spain where he was sent to begin proselyting. But he accidentally bought a ticket for the wrong day and instead went on a later train.?
When he awoke from the crash, somebody was helping him walk out of his train car and crawl out of a ditch where the train car came to rest. He thought he was dreaming for 30 seconds until he felt his blood-drenched face and noticed the scene around him.?
Emergency responders arrived within minutes and led him to a grassy area away from the wreckage where he laid for three hours before being taken by ambulance to a hospital.?
Ward's parents didn't know he was on the train. They knew only that he was scheduled to leave Wednesday from Madrid, where had spent the first six weeks at a training center learning Spanish and how to be a missionary. When Raymond Ward, 45, saw news of the crash on his cellphone, he figured it had nothing to do with his son.?
But an hour later, a Mormon church official in Spain called Raymond Ward and told him his son was on the train ? and survived.?
A picture of the 6-foot-6 Stephen Ward appeared in a Spanish newspaper, blood running down his face, his father said. Stephen Ward also gave an interview from his hospital bed to The Daily Telegraph newspaper in London recounting the harrowing experience.?
"He looks terrible, but he's alive so that's good," Raymond Ward said. "When we talked with him he was in good spirits."?
Stephen Ward is no stranger to hospitals, having spent countless hours fighting to survive cancer when he was younger. He's been healthy since then, and is a gregarious, happy young man who plays piano and excelled in school, his dad said. He left for his mission after one year at Brigham Young University, where he is studying chemical engineering.?
"Not many people come that close to death twice before age 20," Raymond Ward said. "I'm just grateful that he's alive and that's he my son."?

Patriots move to address arrest of Hernandez
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? With Aaron Hernandez's arrest hovering over the start of training camp, the New England Patriots sent out quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick to shed some light.
Brady spoke for 17 minutes Thursday and said the murder charge against his former tight end is "zero" distraction to him.
Belichick spoke for 22 minutes Wednesday and said the team would learn from the "terrible experience."
Both spoke with greater patience and candor than they usually do as the Patriots hurried to remove the stain from their reputation ? and lower media attention ? before their first practice on Friday.
"You talk about the 'Patriot Way' and to me that means mental toughness and to me it means dealing with different situations and adversities over the course of a season and offseason," Brady said, "and how you can put those things behind you and focus on your job."
The Patriots were happy to get back on the field during conditioning tests Thursday.
Brady was asked about the team's morale.
"It's fun. It's exciting," he said. "This is a new year for us. Last year didn't end the way that we would have hoped so we have a chance to go out there and try to do a lot better this year."
The Patriots lost the AFC championship game to the Baltimore Ravens.
"The fate of our season is going to be determined by the guys in the locker room," Brady said, "and, hopefully, nothing else."
Not only must they improve on the field, but, Brady said, the Patriots must work hard to "re-establish what we're all about" after the arrest of Hernandez.
"It's been a challenging offseason," he said. "But we're going to try to move forward as best we know how."
Brady talked at length for the first time since Hernandez's name surfaced in connection with the shooting death of Boston semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd on June 17. Hernandez was arrested on June 26 and cut by the Patriots before he was charged that afternoon. He is being held without bail after pleading not guilty.
"Certainly, it's a very tragic thing that happened and someone loses their life," Brady said, "but all those things were out of the players' control here. We're not really a part of that situation."
He declined to answer several questions, saying he had been advised not to. They included whether he had spoken with Hernandez or whether Hernandez had apologized to him after the tight end was linked to the investigation.
During Hernandez's three seasons since being drafted by the Patriots, he was one of Brady's top receivers.
Asked if he thought he knew Hernandez, Brady said, "the relationship that you have as a football player, the relationship you have within the walls of (Gillette Stadium) are what they are and then people have their own life."
Might people not know others as well as they think they do?
"I don't know if you quantify those things," Brady said. "How well do you know your kids? You try to do the best you can do, but everyone is ultimately accountable for their own decision making."
Asked if Hernandez had fit in with his former teammates, Brady said, "I don't think any of that really matters to me or matters to anything that's going on with the legal process or anything like that."
On the day before camp opened, Belichick displayed unusual patience with questioners and gave more detailed answers than usual after making an opening statement while using notes.
On Thursday, it was the turn of the team's best player.
"It's a terrible thing that happened," Brady said. "There's a very human, compassionate element that we all have and when it's someone that has been on our team, it's a very sad thing. So I think that we, as a team, have tried to move forward with better awareness and understanding of these types of things."
He listed several former teammates ? Tedy Bruschi, Kevin Faulk, Troy Brown, Mike Vrabel ? who represented the Patriots well on and off the field.
"Everyone who has played here has played a part of what the New England Patriots are all about," said Brady, wearing a dark blue sweatshirt with the words, "PATRIOTS ESTABLISHED IN 1960" on the front. "We realize that in light of the recent situation that probably those things get overshadowed and we've got to work hard to kind of re-establish what we're all about.
"And that's, like we said, to win games and to be the best representatives of this team and organization and representatives for this city that we can possibly be."
Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork also spoke Thursday but didn't mention Hernandez's name.
"You're dealing with a real-life situation, so it's easy to get caught up in the media or speculations. We're not here for that," Wilfork said. "I feel bad for the victim's family, but we have to move forward as a football team. That's sad to say, but that's reality."
It's important, he said, to keep off-field issues separate from players' jobs on the field.
"It's going to test this team's chemistry. It's going to test everyone that's in this locker room," Wilfork said. "It's going to test to see how important football is to us. As a family, you just have to take it day-by-day, move forward day-by-day. At the end of the day, the ball is going to continue to roll and the last thing we want to do is be stuck behind the ball."
On Wednesday, a probable cause hearing for Hernandez was rescheduled for Aug. 22 to give prosecutors more time to present evidence to a grand jury.
Might Wilfork be distracted from football if he's called before a grand jury?
"What can I do," he asked. "The only thing I can do is control what I can control and that's playing football. Whatever happens in the future, happens. We'll handle it then."
