NEW YORK (AP) ? Tim Duncan was selected to his 14th All-Star game, Spurs teammate Tony Parker is joining him, and the Chicago Bulls also had two reserves chosen Thursday for next month's game in Houston.
Joakim Noah and Luol Deng were picked from the Bulls, who have stayed in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race despite the season-long absence of point guard Derrick Rose. Noah is one of five first-time All-Stars for the East, along with New York's Tyson Chandler, Indiana's Paul George, Cleveland's Kyrie Irving, and Philadelphia's Jrue Holiday.
Miami's Chris Bosh, picked for his eighth All-Star team, rounded out the East squad.
West forwards David Lee (Golden State), LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland) and Zach Randolph (Memphis) all were picked for the second time. Houston's James Harden was chosen for the first time and joins former Oklahoma City teammate Russell Westbrook, headed to his third straight All-Star game.
Duncan wasn't chosen last year for the first time in his career but has bounced back with a terrific season at age 36, averaging 17.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots, his best statistics since 2009-10.
The co-MVP of the 2000 All-Star game joined a group that includes Michael Jordan for fifth-most selections. Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett, both voted to start, and Shaquille O'Neal all were picked 15 times. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the career leader as a 19-time All-Star.
The reserves were voted by the head coaches from each conference, who had to select two guards, three frontcourt players and two players regardless of position. They were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.
With centers Chandler and Noah, East coaches passed on Brooklyn's Brook Lopez, the leading scorer for a resurgent team that is right behind the Knicks for the Atlantic Division lead. Perennial All-Stars Deron Williams and Joe Johnson of the Nets also missed out, as did Boston's Paul Pierce.
Lee gave the Warriors their first All-Star since Latrell Sprewell in 1997, but coach Mark Jackson and his team hoped for more. However, Stephen Curry wasn't selected despite averaging 20.9 points. He's the league's eighth-leading scorer and the highest one who won't be in Houston for the Feb. 17 showcase.
Lee called his selection "bittersweet" because Curry ? the first person to send him a congratulatory text ? wasn't picked.
"In our practice facility, there's that All-Star chart and it stops at '97 and there hasn't been any since. So the whole team was really excited with the improved record this year and to get one or both of our guys on there," Lee said. "I'm really excited to be the one that goes and represents our team. I wish Steph could be a part of it and maybe he'll still be able to. I'm just very, very excited. It's been a long time for the Bay Area fans. Not only to have an All-Star, but to be winning games."
Voted as East starters by fan voting along with Garnett were Miami's LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, New York's Carmelo Anthony and Boston's Rajon Rondo.
The West starting five is Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard of the Lakers, Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, and Clippers teammates Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.
The Clippers were hoping for a third All-Star, but sixth-man Jamal Crawford wasn't picked.
Commissioner David Stern would choose the replacement if any players are injured.
Randolph leads the NBA with 27 double-doubles and becomes the first Grizzlies player with multiple selections.
"It is truly an honor to be named by the NBA's coaches to the 2013 Western Conference All-Star team," he said in a statement. "I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to playing with the best players in the world."
The leaders of the teams with the best winning percentage in their conference through games of Feb. 3 will be the coaches. Miami's Erik Spoelstra has the inside track on the East spot, while San Antonio's Gregg Popovich and the Clippers' Vinny Del Negro are battling for the West honor since Scott Brooks, whose Thunder have the league's best record, is ineligible after coaching last year.
Irving, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and Holiday were rewarded for outstanding individual seasons even though their teams are well below .500. The 22-year-old Holiday, the youngest All-Star in franchise history, is averaging 19.0 points and 9.0 assists but feared the 76ers' 17-25 mark would work against him.
"I thought so. I definitely thought so. I think anybody else probably would, too," he said while watching a Philadelphia Flyers game. "We're not getting on a winning streak or anything like that. I just tried to stay positive and not talk about it."

I served as a host at a student and alumni networking event in Rochester, N.Y., recently for an out-of-town college, and it reminded me how valuable networking remains for people?and companies?in transition. ?And I saw fresh evidence that networking is most effective as an ongoing activity.
Consider, for example, the prospects of students who performed internships or worked summer jobs in their fields while in college. ?They already have professional relationships to kick-start their networking?and, perhaps, even a job offer from their former associates.
Likewise, students who?ve established themselves professionally in social media have a head start. ?One recruiter I spoke to shook her head at several students who hadn?t yet established LinkedIn profiles, her company?s first step in screening prospective employees.? Compare that to RIT senior Nick Gawreluk, who already has a sufficient industry profile from blogging for Printing Impressions to warrant a video interview on the future of graphic communications for WhatTheyThink.com.
As Nick points out, the graphic communications industry is going through its own transition these days. ?Increasingly, graphic communications providers work with new contacts?marketers?playing a new role, as consultants on best practices for deploying an array of print and electronic media.
Systematic networking is critical to success in this transition. ?Like students taking internships, graphic communications professionals can join marketing and advertising industry associations to learn the industry and develop relationships in non-sales situations. ?Like students taking part-time jobs, graphic communications pros can host seminars and open houses and seek speaking engagements to showcase their capabilities and thought leadership in ways their new targets may find valuable.
And, of course, graphic communications providers can further establish their industry expertise by engaging in blogs, videos, LinkedIn discussion groups and business networking on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media channels.
Networking isn?t easy.? You have to make time for it. ?You have to plan for it. ?And you have to recognize that not every effort will lead to something tangible. ?But, make no mistake, effective networking is a key contributor to students getting fast starts on their careers?and to graphic communications providers leading their industry?s transformation.

New-Delhi- With the recent relaxation of the FAR (floor area ratio) by the Delhi government in the city, the ?green buildings in Delhi are expected to have a higher FAR when compared to the conventional buildings.
Green buildings, which are quite economical, help in reducing the electricity bill, save water and create a comfortable living space. The recent announcement of the implementation of the FAR was done by the?lieutenant governor (LG). The FAR in Delhi mostly varies as per the land?s size.
All the agencies in Delhi were asked by the LG ?to convert the maximum properties in Delhi in to eco-friendly structures as these eco-friendly?buildings are creating a greater impact on reducing the carbon footprint in cities. Apart from this, the green buildings also consume very less?energy?to cool and heat the structure. With the increase of the FAR in Delhi, a large number of people can shift to eco-friendly buildings. This increase in the FAR will also be included in the Delhi Master Plan 2020.
However ?an increase of the FAR by one percent in green buildings has been?recommended by the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) ?to the urban development ministry. As per a DUAC official, the two key features of their recent recommendations are an increase in the FAR along with the ?permission to use the roof area for the roof-top solar photo-voltaic panels by builders.
The official also stated that, since the?green rating for integrated habitat assessment (GRIHA) has become quite obligatory now, it will not find it difficult to transfer to green?architecture. As per his suggestion, there should be three?independent architects who can take up this project, whereas one of them will be the building architect and the two others to ensure that the construction follows the bylaws. With no hindrances in the project, it will be easy to get clearance.
These incentives are being used in the Western countries too to promote the green buildings wherein most of the countries are recommending for the reduction of the clearance time for green buildings.

The basics are your foundation
Today?s post comes courtesy of Jack Harding of e-commerce platform Wish.co.uk
E-commerce ? the buying and selling of products and services over the Internet ? has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity during the last decade. More people than ever before are taking to the World Wide Web to buy everything from groceries to gifts.
Despite the fact that commerce has shifted from bricks-and-mortar stores into the digital online world of e-commerce sites, consumers? basic needs and desires have not changed. People still expect to be treated as valued customers and have their consumer rights respected. They still seek out bargains and remain loyal to brands that they perceive to offer good value for money.
In addition, many consumers regard shopping from their laptop as just as much of a leisure activity as visiting the mall on a Saturday used to be. They are drawn to sites that offer a fun and enjoyable browsing and purchasing experience.
The mistake that many online retailers make is to forget that the service they provide must put the customers? needs first. The lack of face-to-face interaction in online marketing and selling means that it is easy to ignore disgruntled customers and fail to connect with one?s potential market. Online shoppers want to use e-commerce sites that offer a pleasant shopping experience, not just good deals, and quickly become put off by sites that are frustratingly slow or simply not user-friendly. The diversity of retail opportunities on the Internet means that entry into the world of e-commerce is easy for new retailers, but also means that it is easy for customers to go elsewhere if they do not like the service that a particular site offers them.
One site that has attracted particularly heavy criticism during recent years is the notorious discount site Groupon. Groupon offers its customers the opportunity to bag some truly incredibly bargains, but in spite of this attraction it has fallen out of favor in the eyes of many of its customers. Some of the deals offered by Groupon turned out to be less good than customers expected, which damaged the company?s reputation.
Groupon?s business model is to list a small range of product options that are heavily discounted, but only for a short period of time. The idea behind this approach is that the time limit will pressure customers into buying, but it often leads to customers feeling frustrated when they learn that they have missed out on a good deal. Fostering these disgruntled feelings surely cannot be good for the business in the long run.
Wish.co.uk is a modern, exciting company that sells vouchers for activities as diverse as jet pack sessions, tank driving, and riot training; it even gives customers the chance to play their very own part in a zombie apocalypse. These fun experience days are quirky and unusual, but the company is very traditional in its approach to customer service. Instead of a small range of heavily discounted products that change every week, Wish.co.uk has built an attractive website to promote a larger range of high-quality experience days that are sold at consistently low prices.
Because Wish.co.uk focuses heavily on the gift market, encouraging people to purchase experience day vouchers for their friends and family members, presentation matters. While other experience day retailers require customers to print out a voucher and wrap it themselves, Wish.co.uk sends a packaged ticket that is ready to be presented as a gift. Free delivery and superior customer service (Wish.co.uk provides a live chat service on the website for shoppers to ask questions) are some of the reasons why this e-commerce start-up is enjoying such great success. [Editor's note: Please note that views of the author are their own and we do not necessarily endorse personal recommendations of the author]
No matter how much the world of retail changes, the principle of putting the customer first will always apply. By following the example of Wish.co.uk and providing an enjoyable shopping experience backed up by excellent customer support, e-commerce businesses can ensure their own path to success.

SRINAGAR, India (AP) ? Officials in Indian-controlled Kashmir are warning residents to be prepared for a possible nuclear war by building build bomb-proof basements and collecting two weeks' worth of food and water.
Local officials said the advisory was routine, though it was the first time it had been published in a newspaper. They said it did not signal new concerns about a nuclear attack in the region, repeatedly fought over by nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan.
A series of deadly skirmishes along the cease-fire line in recent weeks has heightened tensions between the two countries, and the timing of the advisory surprised many residents in Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"This is fueling an atmosphere of fear. Educating people is fine but not this brazen way," said resident Fayaz Ahmed.
The notice, published Monday by the Kashmir police in the Greater Kashmir newspaper, advised people to build toilet-equipped basements large enough to house their entire families for two weeks. If there is no basement, residents should construct bunkers in their front yards, the notice advised.
The shelters should be stocked with candles, battery-operated lights and radios, it said, adding that stores of nonperishable food and water should be regularly replaced to ensure it is fresh.
The notice said that during a nuclear attack, motorists should dive out of their cars toward the blast to save themselves from being crushed by their soon-to-be tumbling vehicles.
"Expect some initial disorientation as the blast wave may blow down and carry away many prominent and familiar features," it advises.
It also warns residents to keep people contaminated by fallout out of their shelters.
Yoginder Kaul, inspector-general at the civil defense and state disaster response force, said the advisory was part of a normal campaign to educate the public, and the information has been available on a government website for some time.
"We routinely train and educate people regarding different natural and man-made disasters and that's our duty. This advertisement too was part of such a campaign. Please, let's not read into this beyond that. Let it be clear that this is purely in the nature of educating people and not connected with anything else," he said.
Both India and Pakistan claim the divided Kashmir region in its entirety and have fought two wars over it.
Earlier this month, three Pakistani soldiers and two Indian soldiers were killed in the worst bout of fighting in Kashmir since a cease-fire accord was signed by the countries in 2003.
In light of the violence, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Sunday he was reviewing future ties with Pakistan.

A full two-thirds of the country was in the grips of a blast of cold Arctic air Wednesday with temperatures falling to some of the lowest marks in years and wind chills plummeting to dangerously low levels.
The nation?s capital is experiencing what could be its coldest stretch in almost 10 years, according to NBC Washington?s Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer, and brutally cold weather and snow continued to hit much of the Northeast and Great Lakes area.
In the D.C. area Wednesday morning, temperatures were between 16 and 21 degrees with single-digit wind chills, according to the National Weather Service.?

Elsewhere in the Northeast and New England, the coldest air in two years has blanketed the area with subzero wind chills moving in, a stark contrast from the mild weather residents had been experiencing this winter.
In Maine, the arctic air mass settling over the state caused temperatures to drop nearly 75 degrees in one week ? following record highs on Monday -- the Bangor Daily News reported.
Meanwhile the National Weather Service has issued freeze warnings Wednesday for as far south as Florida.
And in the Midwest Wednesday, very cold highs ranging from 10 degrees below zero to five degrees above were forecast from North Dakota to northern Wisconsin.
Temperatures are expected to linger in the mid-20s for the rest of the week, and a moderation of temperatures wouldn?t come until early next week.

The bitter weather has also brought with it some ?impressive? snowfalls, according to Weather.com.
The airport in Erie, Pa., saw 16.3 inches of snow fall at the airport on Monday ? the snowiest day there since Nov. 29, 1979, and making it snowiest January day on record. Other parts of the city saw up to 24 inches.
In New York state, Oswego County got up to 18 inches of snow Sunday through Monday morning, while 19 inches fell in Pulaski in the 24 hours to 9 a.m. Tuesday and Ripley got 24.8 inches over the two days to Tuesday morning.
And parts of Michigan saw 10 inches of snow in the 48 hours ending Tuesday morning. Conditions were milder in other parts of the U.S. with temperatures expected to hit the 30s and 40s from western Nebraska to southern Kansas, and record highs are predicted in the Western U.S.

So, how are the New Years resolutions going?? I heard the fourth week of the year is the hardest since the new resolution is getting a little old and many people don?t continue.? If you haven?t done well with your resolutions, or even if you have, here are four very important questions to ask yourself or to ask your aging parent to start off the new year right.? If you answer ?no? to any of these questions, give us a call.
Four Essential Questions
Elder Law is a broad field with a vast number of issues.? However, it seems that, with very few exceptions, the majority of the consults handled by Elder Law attorneys focus on addressing one or more of four essential questions.
1. Is someone appointed to handle your business if you can?t do it yourself?
The attorneys at our firm strongly believe that a thorough durable power of attorney is the most important estate planning document a person can have, whether you?re 18 or 80.? It is through the durable power of attorney that you nominate someone to handle your business for you in the event you are not able to do so yourself.? The durable power of attorney is the number one tool for avoiding guardianship proceedings in the event of a medical emergency.
2. Are your healthcare documents in order?
We recommend three separate healthcare documents.? First, the healthcare power of attorney, like the durable power of attorney, appoints someone to handle your affairs if you?re unable, except this document deals specifically with healthcare matters.? It is what authorizes doctors and nurses to speak with your representatives about your diagnosis and treatment when you are unable to manage your healthcare on your own, and it is another valuable tool for staying away from guardianship proceedings.? Second, it is wise to execute a HIPAA release form that complies with the federal act governing the release of medical records to ensure your loved ones are not denied access to your medical information.? Third, depending on your wishes regarding end of life care, a living will might be appropriate.? This document puts in writing the wish held by many individuals that they not be left on life preserving machines if they have been diagnosed as being in a permanent vegetative state.? It is not enough that you simply tell your loved ones your opinion on the matter.
3. Do you have an estate plan and does it do what you intend for it to do?
In its most basic sense, an estate plan is simply anything you do to make sure your assets go where you want them to go when you die in the manner in which you want them to go there.? I have emphasized in a number of consultations that having a will does not avoid probate; instead, a will is a set of instructions for the probate judge to follow as your estate passes through the court probate process.? A trust is like a will, in that it contains your instructions for what is to happen after your death, but a trust does not have to go through probate.? I have noted that lifetime deeds can be utilized to avoid probate, but only if they are worded just right ? the absence of a few magic words can throw your estate back into probate.? And we often advise clients of potentially adverse tax consequences associated with lifetime deeds as compared with inheritances received through a will or a trust.
4. Have you done anything to plan for the high costs of long-term care?
The average cost of a nursing home in Arkansas is just under $5,000 per month.? Medicare and private health insurance do not pay for long-term care in a nursing home.? Long-term care insurance is an option if you purchase a policy before any major health issues have been diagnosed, but it can be very expensive.? Help in affording the high costs of long-term care is also available through a couple of government programs.? Veteran?s benefits are available for those who served on active duty during a time of war, or for his or her surviving spouse, if the veteran is deceased.? Medicaid is available to veterans and non-veterans alike.? However, both of these benefits require some planning, because they both include income and asset restrictions.
Many people think that if they have their assets in a trust, those assets can?t be touched by a nursing home or the state if long-term care is needed.? However, if the trust is a standard revocable living trust, nothing could be further from the truth.? Assets in a revocable living trust do count against you for both VA and Medicaid purposes.? On the other hand, there are certain types of specialty trusts you can use for sheltering assets from the high costs of long-term care.? The key is to have accurate information and to plan ahead.

The Internet may have opened worlds for businesses and consumers, but it has also created a public relations nightmare for businesses. Forums, opinion Web sites, blogs, and anything that is publishable can smear a company?s name in moments.
Remember, ?Yours Is a Very Bad Hotel? presentation that described one customer?s bad experience with a hotel chain? Hotels are run by humans. Humans make mistakes. It?s how you handle the mistakes that can make the difference in customer service. Since the hotel?s employees didn?t try to help the customer overcome a bad situation, the customer lashed back and bloggers blogged it.
If the hotel is on top of its game, it would unleash its crisis management (also known as reputation management) team to salvage its reputation while it can. It?s possible for a company to overcome bad PR and come out ahead as in the case of PG&E (California?s Pacific Gas and Electric company).
Another strategy is to use Internet monitoring to monitor online articles regarding a company?s activities to prepare for negative publicity. Some go further and monitor chat rooms, newsgroups, and online discussion forums.
It?s like the story of the town gossip who spread false stories about its people. One day, he felt terrible and went to the chaplain [Rabbi, pastor, priest, or other &mdash take your pick] to ask for forgiveness. The chaplain said,?I will forgive you, but you must do something first.?
?Take a feather pillow, cut it open, and scatter the feathers to the winds.? The man thought this was a strange request, but it was a simple enough task, and he did it gladly. When he returned to tell the chaplain that he had done it, the chaplain said, ?Now, go and gather the feathers. Because you can no more make amends for the damage your words have done than you can recollect the feathers.?
The same can happen to a company without a crisis management plan in place. It?s possible to survive the crisis and thrive as PG&E did. Don?t expect Worldcom to pull out of its Enron-like mess. Fraud is not excusable. And Martha Stewart? She has hired a public relations strategist firm in an effort to do damage control. It?ll be worth watching to see what happens in her case and how the PR firm attempts to save her reputation. Did you know there is a recall on one of her products? Adds fuel to the fire, doesn?t it?

One was born in St. Louis, the other became a star there.
Aside from that, Earl Weaver and Stan Musial were about as different as two Hall of Famers could be.
"Talk about your odd couple," said George Vecsey, the longtime sports columnist for The New York Times who wrote a recent biography of Musial.
Weaver was a 5-foot-6 rabble rouser whose penchant for quarreling with umpires belied a cerebral approach to managing that has stood the test of time. Musial was a humble slugger with a funky batting stance who was beloved by Cardinals fans and respected by pretty much everyone else.
Saturday began with news of Weaver's death at age 82, and by the end of the night Musial had died, too, leaving baseball to reflect on two distinguished careers rich in contrasts.
"Earl was well known for being one of the game's most colorful characters with a memorable wit, but he was also amongst its most loyal," Commissioner Bud Selig said.
Selig later released a statement after Musial's death at age 92.
"Stan's life embodies baseball's unparalleled history and why this game is the national pastime. As remarkable as 'Stan the Man' was on the field, he was a true gentleman in life," Selig said.
A three-time MVP and seven-time National League batting champion, Musial helped the Cardinals win three World Series championships in the 1940s. His popularity in St. Louis can be measured by the not one, but two statues that stand in his honor outside Busch Stadium. After his death Saturday, Cardinals of more recent vintage began offering condolences almost immediately.
"Sad to hear about Stan the Man, it's an honor to wear the same uniform," said a message posted on the Twitter account of Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday.
Albert Pujols, who led St. Louis to World Series titles in 2006 and 2011 before leaving as a free agent before last season, offered prayers for Musial's family via Twitter.
"I will cherish my friendship with Stan for as long as I live," said a message posted on Pujols' site. "Rest in Peace."
Weaver was born in St. Louis, but his greatest success came as a manager in Baltimore. He took the Orioles to the World Series four times, winning one title in 1970.
Never a fan of small-ball strategies like bunting and stealing bases, Weaver preferred to wait for a three-run homer, always hoping for a big inning that could break the game open.
"No one managed a ballclub or pitching staff better than Earl," said Davey Johnson, who played under Weaver with the Orioles.
Johnson now manages the Washington Nationals and ran the Orioles from 1996-97.
"He was decades ahead of his time," Johnson said. "Not a game goes by that I don't draw on something Earl did or said. I will miss him every day."
While Musial could let his bat do the talking, Weaver was more than willing to shout to be heard. His salty-tongued arguing with umpires will live on through YouTube, and Orioles programs sold at the old Memorial Stadium frequently featured photos of Weaver squabbling.
Former umpire Don Denkinger remembered a game in which the manager disputed a call with Larry McCoy at the plate.
"Earl tells us, 'Now I'm gonna show you how stupid you all are.' Earl goes down to first base and ejects the first base umpire. Then he goes to second base and ejects the second base umpire. I'm working third base and now he comes down and ejects me," Denkinger said.
Musial was a quieter type who spent his career far removed from the bright lights of places like New York and Boston. But his hitting exploits were certainly on par with contemporaries Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams.
"I knew Stan very well. He used to take care of me at All-Star games, 24 of them," Hall of Famer Willie Mays said. "He was a true gentleman who understood the race thing and did all he could. Again, a true gentleman on and off the field ? I never heard anybody say a bad word about him, ever."
Dave Anderson of The New York Times recalled growing up in Brooklyn, rooting for Musial. Those Dodgers crowds helped give Musial his nickname, Stan the Man.
"I thought he was going to knock the fence down in Brooklyn, he'd hit it so often," Anderson said.
Musial did it despite an odd left-handed stance ? with his legs and knees close together, he would cock the bat near his ear and twist his body away from the pitcher before uncoiling when the ball came.
If that was a lasting snapshot of Musial, the images of Weaver will stay just as fresh ? the feisty manager, perhaps with his hat turned backward, looking up at an umpire and screaming at him before kicking dirt somewhere and finally leaving the field.
None of those histrionics should obscure the fact that in the end, Weaver often had the last laugh ? to the tune of a .583 career winning percentage.
"When you discuss our game's motivational masters, Earl is a part of that conversation," Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said. "He was a proven leader in the dugout and loved being a Hall of Famer. Though small in stature, he was a giant as a manager."

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? The opponent was different, the match three rounds earlier. Still, the result gave Novak Djokovic a familiar feeling, and another chance to rip off his shirt in celebration.
Djokovic needed just over 5 hours to beat Stanislas Wawrinka 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 12-10 in a fourth-round match Sunday night at the Australian Open, on the same court where he needed 5:53 to beat Rafael Nadal in last year's final.
"I just had flashback of 2012," Djokovic said. "It was maybe 45 minutes less this match than the one 12 months ago, but still it was still as exciting. I tried to enjoy the moment and couldn't ask for more. What a match point ... unbelievable."
He wasn't exaggerating about the match point. On his third attempt to end it, his backhand cross-court shot zipped past the valiant Wawrinka, who, Djokovic conceded, had outplayed him for most of the night.
"He came up with great tactics today," Djokovic said. "He didn't give me a lot of the same rhythm that I could get into the match. He was the one being in charge. I was passive. "
The win was Djokovic's 18th in a row at Melbourne Park after winning the last two Australian titles and advanced the Serbian star to the quarterfinals of his 15th consecutive major tournament.
Wawrinka, who had been receiving treatment to his upper leg muscles from late in the fourth set, said he would take more positives than negatives out of the match. He led 5-2 in the second set after outplaying Djokovic in the first.
"For sure, I think the best match I have ever played," Wawrinka said. "I fought like a dog like always. At 4-4 in the final set, I thought I might have won the match, but he was just better."
Djokovic will next play No. 5 Tomas Berdych, who needed five match points in the tiebreaker before beating South Africa's Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (13).
Fourth-seeded David Ferrer won 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 over No. 16 Kei Nishikori of Japan to set up a quarterfinal against fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, who was leading 6-2, 5-1 when No. 8 Janko Tipsaveric retired from their fourth-round match.
The Djokovic-Wawrinka match overshadowed Maria Sharapova's accomplishment earlier in the day.
Sharapova advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kirsten Flipkens in another impressive display ? last year's French Open champion has lost just five games through four rounds, breaking the Australian Open mark of eight held previously by eventual champions Steffi Graf and Monica Seles.
"A couple that I've won, I felt like I was playing great from the beginning and I was able to carry that through the whole tournament," said Sharapova, who won titles in 2004 at Wimbledon, 2006 at the U.S. Open and 2008 in Australia before completing her career Grand Slam with a victory at last year's French Open.
She can't remember ever winning so few games through four rounds of a tournament, but realizes this means nothing if she doesn't make it to the latter stages.
"Well, I'm certainly happy to be playing this well but ... it only gets tougher from here," said Sharapova, who is playing her first tournament of 2013 after withdrawing from a warm-up event at Brisbane because of an injured right collarbone.
She next plays fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova, who beat fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-4. Sharapova defeated Makarova in the quarterfinals here last year on her way to the final, which she lost in straight sets to Victoria Azarenka.
Li Na, who reached the final here in 2011 and won the French Open later that year, saved a set point in the tiebreaker before beating Julia Goerges 7-6 (6), 6-1. She'll play No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska, who beat No. 13 Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 6-4 for her 13th consecutive win. Radwanska won the Auckland and Sydney titles before coming to Melbourne.
On Monday, Roger Federer plays Milos Raonic, and U.S. Open champion Andy Murray faces Gilles Simon. Azarenka, Serena Williams and fellow American Sloane Stephens also have their fourth-round matches.
Thy will have a tough time matching the spectacle of Sunday's late-night encounter.
Djokovic had beaten Wawrinka ? the perennial No. 2 among Swiss tennis players to 17-time major winner Roger Federer ? in their 10 previous matches. He hadn't lost a head-to-head since 2006 and had won 11 straight sets between them.
Wawrinka stunned the top-ranked Djokovic with three service breaks in the first set and had that 5-2 lead in the second before the 25-year-old Serb rallied by winning six consecutive games. But just as Djokovic seemed to be taking control, Wawrinka launched his own comeback to win a long tiebreaker and force a fifth set.
Djokovic got to serve first in the fifth, giving him a psychological edge as long as he held his serve.
Wawrinka had game point in the 22nd game but let Djokovic get on a roll. He saved his first match point with a service winner, then saved another two minutes later.
At 1:40 a.m. local time, Wawrinka was whacking his head with the racket and biting the ball after giving Djokovic another match point.
Moments later, he was slumped on the court, exhausted. Djokovic raised both arms, walked to the net and embraced his beaten rival, then pulled of his shirt and flexed.
"Give him credit, he made me run all over the court," Djokovic said. "He never gave me the same ball. He was aggressive from both sides. I didn't know what was coming next."

A rogue Arsenal fan has tricked hundreds of his fellow Gooners into believing Theo Walcott had finally signed a new contract at the club ? by posting a link to the news of the forward?s last renewal in 2009.
Walcott?s future has been the subject of plenty of column inches in the last few months, with the 23-year-old?s current deal due to expire at the end of the season.
It is understood that Walcott is set to pen a new contract soon, after holding more talks with the club this week, but the wait to get pen-to-paper has left many Arsenal fans anxious.
So when a supporter posted the news that Walcott had finally signed up, hundreds of fans rushed to the Twitter account to pass on the information.
The retweets and favourites soon piled up, as the fan provided a link to the Arsenal website that appeared to prove the news was legit.
However, only after closer inspection a short time later was it revealed that the website article was from 2009 ? when Walcott last signed a new contract at the club.
The old news soon left plenty fuming, with some of the comments too blue too publish.

While there exists a natural right to form marriages, and while we have a right to form those marriages without government interference (a negative right), we do not have the right to government recognition of our marriages (a positive right).? The State regulates marriage because it is in their best interest to manage the procreative potential of opposite sex couples, not because they have a moral obligation to do so.? The institution of marriage is a natural union that exists prior to, and wholly independent of government recognition.
What basis is there, then, for SSM advocates to claim they have a right to civil marriage?? While those with homosexual orientations have a right to form same-sex relationships[1], they have no corresponding right to have their relationships recognized and regulated by the government.
Of course, homosexuals could argue that since the government has chosen to recognize and regulate marital relationships, however, that equality and fairness requires that they regulate both same-sex and opposite-sex relationships.? Unfortunately, the equality argument works against them.? The principle of equality is that equally positioned parties should be treated equally, but same-sex relationships are not equally positioned to opposite-sex relationships.
Each kind of relationship functions very differently in society.? As a rule, opposite-sex couples produce and prepare the next generation of society: children.? The very survival of society depends on opposite-sex relationships.? That is why society has deemed such relationships worthy of social approval and support.? The same cannot be said of same-sex relationships.? As a rule, they neither create nor rear children.? The future of society does not hang on their relationships.? Same-sex relationships only benefit those who participate in them, whereas opposite-sex relationships benefit society as a whole.
If the two relationships do not function the same way in society, then there is no reason for society to recognize them as equal.? Indeed, to legally declare two unequal things to be equal, proving them both with the same benefits and name, is unjust.? Put another way, not only is there no compelling social interest in regulating same-sex relationships, but to treat same-sex relationships as if they were equal to marital relationships would be unfair. Since marriage is a social declaration, society has both the right and responsibility to limit the institution of marriage to those who, in principle, are capable of forming families, which is what the institution of marriage has always been about.
See also Marriage, Same-Sex Marriage, and Fundamental?Rights
[1]?Although, unlike opposite-sex marriages, these unions are unnatural, and thus there is no natural right to engage in same-sex relationships.? As such, governments can either prohibit or permit such relationships at their own discretion.

Say what you will about the recruiting race in the Big Ten, but in terms of affecting a team's title hopes in 2013, the Michigan Wolverines pulled off the biggest recruiting heist in the nation when Taylor Lewan decided to come back for his senior year. How many other teams can say they added an immediately All-American caliber tackle to their expected 2013 roster?
Of course, recruiting is a longer game than just what happens in the first season of the recruits' collegiate career, and most recruits won't even play a down in their very first year on campus. So in terms of the guys actually putting pen to paper to commit to schools?Michigan included?these signings are more about 2016 and 2017 than 2013.
Still, Lewan's return is enormous for Michigan, and it's especially so for anyone who's going to be a direct beneficiary of his return by carrying the ball behind him. Devin Gardner's going to be kept more upright as a result of Lewan's return, and whoever makes up Michigan's rotation at tailback will likely rush for more yards now that Lewan's back than if the Wolverines were forced to go with an inexperienced left tackle.
Uncommitted tailback Derrick Green, a 5-star prospect out of Richmond, Virginia, could very well be one of those beneficiaries. Green is down to Michigan, Tennessee and Auburn for his choice of colleges to attend, and Michigan's a strong contender to land his services.
Green could very well play as a true freshman, especially if Fitz Toussaint is slow to recover from a major leg injury suffered against Iowa near the end of the 2012 season. Michigan is rather light in the backfield behind Toussaint, with bruiser Thomas Rawls and sophomore Justice Hayes being the only other Wolverines to return who played meaningful minutes at RB in 2012 (Drake Johnson, a middling recruit from the 2012 class, redshirted last year).
We do know Green is looking forward to playing as a true freshman; he told the Detroit Free Press that the prospect of doing so is one of the reasons he's considering Michigan as a destination. He would have a major chance to succeed right away, and his combination of size (6'0", 220 pounds) and speed (a slightly dubious 4.36 40-yard dash) means he's physically ready to carry a collegiate workload on the ground.
That being said, Green's got a four-year career at Michigan to be concerned about, so if offensive linemen are what will drive him to commit to the Wolverines (and for a tailback, that is very smart logic), it's going to be less about Taylor Lewan and more about the linemen in this class and 2012.?
In that class and this, Michigan is investing heavily in its offensive line, which promises good tidings for Green and any other running back who will eventually make his way to Ann Arbor. Kyle Kalis is the crown jewel of the 2012 class, a 5-star lineman who was under consideration for immediate playing time before eventually redshirting. Michigan added three other offensive linemen in the 2012 class, all of them being 4-star prospects according to Rivals.com.
But Brady Hoke was only getting started. Hoke boasts seven offensive line commitments for the 2013 class, with five earning four stars from Rivals.com and two already enrolled in school. Assuming no late movement from anyone involved, that's 11 offensive linemen within a year of Green in eligibility, and Hoke's almost certainly going to be able to craft a strong front five for Green from that group alone.
So yes, it's possible Taylor Lewan's return will bring Derrick Green to Ann Arbor. However, it's more likely that Green's fellow 2013 classmates will do so, because they're the ones who would be plowing the way for him as his career progresses.
