Zambia opposition leader arrested on graft charges

LUSAKA (Reuters) - Zambian police on Tuesday arrested the leader of the country's largest opposition party on charges of corruption during his tenure as a diplomat in Canada.

Nevers Mumba, president of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) that ruled Zambia for two decades until 2011, said he was innocent and accused the government of persecuting him.

"The president is supposed to be solving numerous problems but instead he is just intimidating people," Mumba said before being led to police holding cells.

Police said they suspect that when Mumba was high commissioner to Canada in 2011, he mishandled a donation of about $120,000 from a Canadian mining firm to the Zambian government.

Mumba is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

President Michael Sata, elected in September 2011, has pledged to crack down on corruption in Africa's top copper producer.

His government is probing several deals approved by the government of his predecessor, President Rupiah Banda.
